The Grand Knik Tour is the top choice for glacier enthusiasts! Enjoy breathtaking sightseeing and three remote landings on this staff favorite Anchorage glacier tour. Some of the sights you’ll encounter are icebergs the size of buildings, unique and up-close views of glaciers, as well as the awe-inspiring Great Gorge of the Knik Glacier. Furthermore, the landings offer you ample time to explore this diverse land. They include the shores of Lake George, a high alpine peak, and finally the middle of Knik Glacier near the blue melt pools! Your total time in the air is around 40-minutes with over an hour of exploration at the landings. If you’re looking for an Anchorage glacier tour that provides exceptional sightseeing and adventure, then the Grand Knik Tour is for you!

The excitement begins as the helicopter takes off and you fly down the Great Gorge of the Knik Glacier, an incredibly scenic Natural Landmark. Gaze upon walls of ice that are hundreds of feet high, rising out of the glacially fed Lake George as you touch down on the shores. Have your camera ready for incredible pictures as calving happens often and the gorgeous lake is filled with floating icebergs. You’ll have a half-hour to explore these scenic shores, then it’s time for your second landing! As you make your way to a high alpine meadow, keep an eye out for moose, Dall Sheep, and bears foraging along the hillside. This vantage point also provides a birds eye view of Knik Glacier, with Colony and Cataract Glaciers in the distance. Last but not certainly least, it’s time for your Knik Glacier landing! With the provided crampons, your guide takes you on a safe and fascinating 30-minute ice exploration. See the deep blue ice and melt pools, and fill your water bottle with crisp glacier water! Additionally, gain a new appreciation for glaciers as your guide teaches you about their life cycle. Finally, enjoy the last flight back to the base… with a camera full of pictures and memories for a lifetime!

    How is transportation arranged?

Answer: This tour does not include transporation from downtown Anchorage to the Knick Glacier Lodge. If you would like to add transporation for an additional fee, please email us at [email protected].

How long is the flight and glacier walk?

Answer: The total flight time is approximately 40 minutes, with 30 minutes of time on the glacier and approximately 30 minutes of exploration for the other landings.

What type of helicopter will I be in?

Answer: We fly Robinson 44s and ASTAR helicopters. We can't guarantee the type of helicopter you will be flying in, however if requested we will do our best to accommodate your request. Parties of more than 3 guests may be in 2 helicopters, but will always be together for the tour. In all our years of flying, we maintain a perfect safety record and are meticulous about maintenance and safety. Helicopters are FAA inspected, certified, and fully insured. Flying with us is very safe.

Can I take pictures during the flight?

Answer: You bet! You'll get great pictures from the helicopter! There are big windows all around you and no wings to get in the way!

    How many passengers per helicopter?

Answer: Each helicopter can seat up to 6 passengers, provided the weight and balance calculations work out in each aircraft. Please contact us if you are interested in booking a party larger than 6 people.

    Who sits where?

Answer: Our ground crew and pilots balance the helicopter based on passenger weight. We cannot make any promises for specific seating because safety cannot be compromised. If you have a preference, ask us and when it’s safe we will try to accommodate you. If you want you can book a private tour to ensure there are no other people in the helicopter – that way you have more control over who sits where.

Will we see wildlife on the tour?

Answer: While we can never guarantee wildlife sightings, chances are excellent on this tour! We often see moose and Dall sheep, with occasional black bear sightings.

What if I need extra help on the tour?

Answer: Please contact us for wheelchair or limited mobility access so that we can discuss your needs. We especially enjoy taking people out that think they can't do anything like this!

Is the morning or afternoon tour better?

Answer: It's really your preference that matters most here. Typically, the mornings have slightly less wind. The afternoon temperatures tend to be a bit higher.

    What should I wear?

Answer: The temperature on the glacier is often colder than you may be used to. Layered clothing with a wind & waterproof outer layer is the key to comfort. Wear sturdy footwear like hiking boots or athletic shoes, a light hat, gloves, & sunglasses. Bring a reusable water bottle and don't forget a camera that is ready for lots of pictures! We provide crampons to wear that allow you to walk safely on the glacier. These fit over your shoes.

What happens if the weather is too bad to fly?

Answer: The Knik Valley sees more sunshine and less rain than other popular flightseeing areas. However, we do have bad weather days and there is no way to tell far ahead of time when that is going to be. If the weather is just not cooperating and the pilots determine that it’s too bad to fly, we’ll do our best to reschedule you. If you choose not to reschedule or we can’t find a time that works for you, we will refund you.
