If you’re looking for fun and unique glacier viewing near Anchorage, then the Helicopter & Zodiac Iceberg Tour is for you! After an incredibly scenic flight, you’ll arrive at the iceberg-studded Lake George. A zodiac-style motorized boat takes you across the lake to see these giant blocks of ice up close. Colony Glacier comes into view as you listen for cracking and maybe even witness calving that happens daily! There are no roads to this hidden gem, so you’re likely to be the only ones on this magnificently remote lake. Take a chunk of ice back with you to enjoy a glacier iced drink! This excursion is the perfect choice for those with an adventurous spirit and a wonder for these fascinating and ancient icebergs.

Within just a few minutes after takeoff, the impressively massive Knik Glacier comes into view. You’ll fly through the Great Gorge of the Knik and then arrive on the beautiful shores of Lake George. After gearing up, you’ll follow the guide down a short ladder to the boat. Soon, you’ll realize the scale of the massive icefall from Colony Glacier and find yourself surrounded by these deep blue and white sculptures of nature. Your expert guide teaches you about the life cycle of icebergs and glaciers, and listens for potential calving. Some of these icebergs are the size of buildings, and you’ll get as close as possible to them while keeping in mind that safety is the guide’s first priority. After a full hour at the lake, it’s then time for the return helicopter flight. Keep an eye out as you’ll have the opportunity to see moose and other animals foraging in the valley. Make sure your camera has plenty of space for amazing pictures! You’ll want to share photos and stories of this Helicopter & Zodiac Iceberg Tour with all of your friends!

Note: Guests can drive themselves to the base at Knik River Lodge or purchase a roundtrip transfer shuttle from Anchorage (see FAQs for more details).

    How is transportation arranged?

Answer: You can drive yourself to the Knik River Lodge helicopter base which is about 1-hour northeast of Anchorage. Alternatively, you can add a roundtrip transfer shuttle to your booking. The 10:15 am and 4:30 pm departures have scheduled transfers from most major hotels in Anchorage as well as the log cabin visitor center on 4th Avenue in downtown. If choosing either the 10:15 am or 4:30 pm tour times, you'll purchase the $59 'transfer shuttle' option. For any other tour time, you'll need to purchase the $98 'Custom Transfer'. As always, detailed instructions are provided in your confirmation email and voucher.

How long is the flight and boat ride?

Answer: The helicopter flight is 15 minutes each way (30 min total) with a 1 hour boat tour at Lake George.

What kind of boat is it?

Answer: This is a 15.5' long Zodiac-style boat, the same model used by Special Forces. It is equipped with a small, super quiet 4-stroke outboard motor.

What type of helicopter will I be in?

Answer: We fly Robinson 44s and ASTAR helicopters. We can't guarantee the type of helicopter you will be flying in, however if requested we will do our best to accommodate your request. Parties of more than 3 guests may be in 2 helicopters, but will always be together for the tour. In all our years of flying, we maintain a perfect safety record and are meticulous about maintenance and safety. Helicopters are FAA inspected, certified, and fully insured. Flying with us is very safe.

    How many passengers per helicopter?

Answer: Each helicopter can seat up to 6 passengers, provided the weight and balance calculations work out in each aircraft. Please contact us if you are interested in booking a party larger than 6 people.

    Who sits where?

Answer: Our ground crew and pilots balance the helicopter based on passenger weight. We cannot make any promises for specific seating because safety cannot be compromised. If you have a preference, ask us and when it’s safe we will try to accommodate you. If you want you can book a private tour to ensure there are no other people in the helicopter – that way you have more control over who sits where.

Will we see wildlife on the tour?

Answer: While we can never guarantee wildlife sightings, chances are excellent on this tour! We usually have daily sightings of moose, bears, mountain goats, and Dall sheep.

What if I need extra help on the tour?

Answer: Please contact us for wheelchair or limited mobility access so that we can discuss your needs.

Is the morning or afternoon tour better?

Answer: It's really your preference that matters most here. Typically, the mornings have slightly less wind. The afternoon temperatures tend to be a bit higher.

    What should I wear?

Answer: The temperature near the glacier is often colder than you may be used to. Layered clothing is the key to comfort. Wear a long sleeved shirt, sweater, wind/waterproof outer layers, and sturdy shoes. Bring a light hat, gloves, sunglasses, a reusable water bottle, and don't forget a camera! We provide expert guides, waterproof boots, and Coast Guard approved marine grade life jackets that are fully insulated to keep you warm and safe.

What happens if the weather is too bad to fly?

Answer: The Knik Valley sees more sunshine and less rain than other popular flightseeing areas. However, we do have bad weather days and there is no way to tell far ahead of time when that is going to be. If the weather is just not cooperating and the pilots determine that it’s too bad to fly, we’ll do our best to reschedule you. If you choose not to reschedule or we can’t find a time that works for you, we will refund you.
