Wildlife Sightings

Moose & Dall sheep are common, occasional black bears

The Knik Glacier Landing is a great choice for those looking for an easy and affordable tour that gets them on a glacier. As with all Anchorage helicopter tours, the 30-minutes of flight time is packed with spectacular views of the diverse landscape. See mesmerizing glacial features and giant icebergs surrounded by snow-capped peaks, along with wildlife foraging on the hillsides. Then, the guided glacier walk allows you to become completely immersed in this remote and extraordinary environment. Explore the stunning azure colored melt pools and more glacial features for 30-minutes before heading back to the base. An incredible value tour for a guided glacier walk, it’s no wonder this Knik Glacier Landing is one of the most popular Anchorage helicopter tours!

Almost immediately after takeoff, the 25-mile long and 5-mile wide Knik Glacier comes into view. As you make your way over the iceberg-studded Lake George, watch for calving from the Colony Glacier’s massive vertical ice walls. Then, excitement grows as you see the glacial crevasses, moulins, glacial rivers and waterfalls. Your pilot gently touches down on the middle of Knik Glacier, right next to these other-worldly features. The provided crampons allow you to walk safely on the ice while you explore this wonderland with your guide. Learn about the fascinating life cycle of glaciers, fill your water bottle with crisp glacier water, and take lots of frame-worthy photos! When it’s time to head back, look for moose, Dall sheep, and even black bears as you fly low through the beautiful river valley. This Knik Glacier Landing is an experience you’ll remember for a lifetime!

    How is transportation arranged?

Answer: This tour does not include transporation from downtown Anchorage to the Knick Glacier Lodge. If you would like to add transporation for an additional fee, please email us at [email protected].

How long is the flight and glacier walk?

Answer: The total flight time is 30-minutes, and your guided walk on the glacier is also 30 minutes.

What type of helicopter will I be in?

Answer: We fly Robinson 44s and ASTAR helicopters. We can't guarantee the type of helicopter you will be flying in, however if requested we will do our best to accommodate your request. Parties of more than 3 guests may be in 2 helicopters, but will always be together for the tour. In all our years of flying, we maintain a perfect safety record and are meticulous about maintenance and safety. Helicopters are FAA inspected, certified, and fully insured. Flying with us is very safe.

Can I take pictures during the flight?

Answer: You bet! You'll get great pictures from the helicopter! There are big windows all around you and no wings to get in the way!

    How many passengers per helicopter?

Answer: Each helicopter can seat up to 6 passengers, provided the weight and balance calculations work out in each aircraft. Please contact us if you are interested in booking a party larger than 6 people.

    Who sits where?

Answer: Our ground crew and pilots balance the helicopter based on passenger weight. We cannot make any promises for specific seating because safety cannot be compromised. If you have a preference, ask us and when it’s safe we will try to accommodate you. If you want you can book a private tour to ensure there are no other people in the helicopter – that way you have more control over who sits where.

Will we see wildlife on the tour?

Answer: While we can never guarantee wildlife sightings, chances are excellent on this tour! We often see moose, bear, mountain goats, and Dall sheep.

What if I need extra help on the tour?

Answer: This tour is suitable for people with limited mobility and upon request even for guests that are in a collapsible wheelchair, as long as they have decent upper body control and someone is with them to help our staff with getting in and out of the helicopter. We’ll go the extra mile to get everybody out there!

Is the morning or afternoon tour better?

Answer: It's really your preference that matters most here. Typically, the mornings have slightly less wind. The afternoon temperatures tend to be a bit higher.

    What should I wear?

Answer: The temperature on the glacier is often colder than you may be used to. Layered clothing with a wind & waterproof outer layer is the key to comfort. Wear sturdy footwear like hiking boots or athletic shoes, a light hat, gloves, & sunglasses. Bring a reusable water bottle and don't forget a camera that is ready for lots of pictures! We provide crampons to wear that allow you to walk safely on the glacier. These fit over your shoes.

What happens if the weather is too bad to fly?

Answer: The Knik Valley sees more sunshine and less rain than other popular flightseeing areas. However, we do have bad weather days and there is no way to tell far ahead of time when that is going to be. If the weather is just not cooperating and the pilots determine that it’s too bad to fly, we’ll do our best to reschedule you. If you choose not to reschedule or we can’t find a time that works for you, we will refund you.
