How long/difficult is the Matanuska Glacier hike?

Answer: You will be walking approximately 2-miles and be on the glacier for about 3-hours. This trek is accessible for most fitness levels. You will walk at a slow, cautious pace with crampons that will allow you to trek safely across the icy and uneven terrain.

Answer: Roundtrip transportation from your Anchorage hotel, local and expert tour guides, lunch stop (food for purchase), and park entrance fees are included. You will be provided with crampons, helmet, and a trekking pole if desired. You should wear hiking boots with ankle support, tall synthetic or wool socks, long pants, quick-dry clothing (not cotton or jeans), and a rain jacket. Could I explore Matanuska Glacier on my own?

Answer: Hiking Matanuska Glacier without a guide is much more difficult than you might imagine. Besides the issue of safety, crampons/micro-spikes are necessary to be able to walk on the ice. Additionally, the private road to access the terminal moraine is dirt/gravel, which many rental vehicles are not allowed to drive on. To get the most out of your Matanuska Glacier hike you will want to go with a professional guide.
