Channel Islands Marine Park Paddle

Arriving

Take a leisurely and stunning sea kayak paddle along the shorelines of a group of uninhabited islands, quietly taking in the grandeur of the scenery and observing an abundance of wildlife, on the Channel Island Marine Park Paddle, one of the best Juneau shore excursions for a true Alaskan eco-adventure. The Channel Islands State Marine Park, just a short distance from Juneau, consists of over a dozen islands covered in temperate rainforest and serves as a refuge for all manner of amazing wildlife, from humpback whales, porpoises, orcas, sea lions, and harbor seals in the water; to bears, otters, and deer along the shore and bald eagles soaring overhead. Gliding quietly in a sea kayak in a small group of just six people allows for a remarkable opportunity to experience the wonders of nature up-close in a pristine wilderness environment. You’ll also go ashore on one of the islands to do some beachcombing, explore the intertidal zone, and take in the majestic beauty of the icy peaks of the Chilkat and Coast Ranges in the distance. To truly experience wild Alaska in an intimate way, the small-group Channel Island Marine Park Paddle is among the Juneau shore excursions you won’t want to miss.

As with other Juneau shore excursions, your eco-adventure begins with pick-up right at the cruise docks and transportation to the kayak base. Here you’ll be fitted with kayaking gear and receive safety instructions before boarding a water taxi for stunning ride along the Inside Passage out to Channel Islands State Marine Park. From here, it’s into the sea kayaks for 2+ hours of paddling in the pristine Marine Park, including time for exploring uninhabited beaches and lush rainforest by foot. The Channel Island Marine Park Paddle is a family-friendly eco-adventure suitable for all guests 8 and older, with no previous kayaking experience required. It’s sure to be an outing you won’t forget! Note: A private group option is also available for parties of up to 12.

Will the trip still operate if it is raining?

Answer: Because much of SE Alaska is a rainforest, these trips do operate rain or shine. Rain jackets and pants are provided on this trip. If weather conditions are unsafe, the trip will be canceled and we will provide a full refund. This can happen on kayaking trips from time to time and will be typically related to sea or lake conditions, not rain.

What if our ship is delayed or doesn't make it into port? Refund?

Answer: It's very rare that a ship is delayed into port, but in those cases we will try our best to work with you to reschedule the tour to a later time. If that is not a possibility or your ship doesn't make it into port, we will of course refund the full cost of the tour.

What about restroom facilities along the way?

Answer: You'll have a chance at the kayak base to use the restroom, but after that we will be entering the great outdoors. We recommend all guests follow 'Leave No Trace Principles' and should the need arise, we request packing all trash from the trip including toilet paper. If this is of concern for you, we recommend bringing toilet paper and a ziploc bag for easy packing.

How many guests are on this tour?

Answer: There can be up to 6 passengers on this trip and there is a minimum of 2 guests for the trip to operate. With advanced notice, we can accommodate larger groups on private tours.

Do I need previous kayaking experience?

Answer: Nope! This trip is rated as 'Easy' or 'Moderate' and we can accommodate even beginner kayakers. There is a recommended fitness level with the ability to paddle 4 miles and to be seated in a kayak for about 2 hours.
