The Extended Helicopter Glacier Trek is the ultimate Alaskan glacier adventure! Save your energy for time spent on the glacier during an awe-inspiring flight over the massive Juneau Icefield. While many glacier tours require a strenuous hike or paddle just to access the glacier, the Extended Helicopter Glacier Trek takes you on an incredible ride with stunning views to a remote glacier. Furthermore, spend three full hours of exploration which includes hiking and ice-climbing in this pristine environment. While here, drink refreshing glacier water as you navigate around deep crevasses and frozen rivers of ice. Additionally, this tour offers the more time and adventure on the glacier than any other, making it one of the best Alaska cruise tours! Certainly an experience you’ll remember for a lifetime, with endless views in a beautifully remote setting.

Your journey begins with pickup at the cruise ship dock and a ride to the helicopter base. While here, your gear will be fitted and you’ll receive a safety briefing. Then, excitement builds as you board the helicopter and soar over majestic snow-capped mountains. Your pilot will land on the ideal glacier for the day, dependent on weather conditions. This can include Mendenhall Glacier, along with several other remote glaciers in the Juneau Icefield. Your journey then continues, as you enjoy three full hours of hiking across rugged terrain and exploring the many glacial features. The enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides will be with you every step of the way, teaching you rope techniques and assisting you in climbing and descending ice walls. Lastly, you’ll enjoy more panoramic views while heading back to town, hopefully with a camera full of memories!

An appetite for adventure is a must on this Extended Helicopter Glacier Trek! While no experience is necessary, it does require extended physical activity. It’s one of the best Alaska cruise tours for hikers and glacier enthusiasts and an unforgettable Juneau Alaska excursion.

    How many passengers per helicopter?

Answer: Each helicopter can seat up to 6 passengers, provided the weight and balance calculations work out in each aircraft.

What if my tour group is larger than 6 people?

Answer: There are several helicopters available at the base, and we can make accommodations for larger groups with advance notice. If your group exceeds 6 passengers and requires the use of multiple aircraft, we instruct the pilots to coordinate landing locations on the glacier so that you can have your landing time together.

Will the pilot get out with us?

Answer: Definitely. Your pilot will act as your guide for your entire helicopter tour, including the time you’ll spend on the glacier. This allows for a truly focused tour experience.

Can children come on the tour?

Answer: This tour has a minimum age requirement of 15 years old.

    What should I wear?

Answer: Dress warmly and in layers as the temperature on the glacier is often colder than you are used to. We recommend long pants, a hat, mid-height athletic socks, and sunglasses! The following equipment is provided: Rain and wind-proof jacket and pants, hard shell mountaineering boots, crampons, gloves, helmet, harness, trekking pole, and pack with tissues, water, and a granola bar. Remember to bring your camera and an appetite for adventure!

What if I need extra help on the tour?

Answer: Your pilot will be with you the entire tour, so they’ll be happy to lend a helping hand whenever necessary. If you require extra assistance, don’t hesitate to contact us ahead of your tour and discuss your particular needs.

What happens if the weather is too bad to fly?

Answer: If the weather is just not cooperating and the pilots determine that it’s too bad to fly, we’ll do our best to reschedule you to a later time of day that works for you. If you choose not to reschedule or we can’t find a time that works for you, we will refund you.
