One of our popular and most budget-friendly Juneau excursions, the City and Glacier Tour is the perfect casual outing, especially for visitors hoping to also explore other activities. Take a comfortable motor-coach tour of historic Juneau and get up close to the majestic Mendenhall Glacier, all in one fun and relaxing half-day excursion. Hop aboard to explore Alaska’s capital city, once the number-one mining town in the world, and take in its stunning place among mountain vistas and meandering waterways. Then get ready for your ride to the Mendenhall Glacier, one of 38 massive glaciers in the Juneau ice field, and prepare to be stunned by the ethereal blue ice of its towering face! One of our top Juneau excursions, this Juneau city tour is the best of both worlds!

During your 45-minute Juneau city tour, you’ll pass through the historic downtown district and colorful old port while learning about this modern city, one that still retains elements of its beginnings as a wild frontier town and an epicenter for one of the largest gold rushes in world history. Your local guide will be a native Tlingit Indian, who can also teach you about the origins and culture of the Haida-Tlingit tribes, as well as Russian, European, and American influences on the city and region. Your Juneau city tour will conclude by passing over the Gastineau Channel for sweeping panoramic views of the city (the perfect point for a photo stop!). Your transport will then continue to the Mendenhall Glacier. Here, you’ll have another 45 minutes to walk a short trail around Mendenhall Lake, with its many floating icebergs, toward the face of the glacier itself. You’ll also have the option to get an elevated view of the ice from the Visitor Center, where you’ll find some fascinating interactive geological exhibits. (Note: $3 Visitor Center entrance fee not included). From the Visitor Center, you will be returned to the cruise docks after having combined two very relaxing and enjoyable Juneau excursions in a delightful half-day of exploration.

If you’re looking to explore Juneau as well as get out into nature, you might consider our Whale Watching, Mendenhall Glacier, and Juneau City Combo Tour.

Very nice tour of city and glacier. Our guide (Bea) was very informative. We really enjoyed this tour

Our guides on the buses out to the glacier were both Native American locals who provided great information and insight into the Juneau area and history. Both were a lot of fun. The glacier was beautiful! There was a slight mix up on our reservation but we were put on the trolley tour and then we went out to the glacier and all worked out for the best.

A little disappointing.I was looking forward to this tour, but we were left a little disappointed. We booked the 3pm tour, the tour was 2.5 hours and it said we would be back by 5:30, so we booked 6:30 dinner reservations. That should have been plenty of time for us to do everything. When we checked in the guy said that we would leave at 3:30. I said what happened to 3:00 because we need to be back by 5:30. He then said that he could arrange things to still have us back by 5:30 but that meant losing 30 mins of our tour. I said that wasn't acceptable and I wanted the tour that we had booked. After some finagling we managed to get on two separate tours that would leave at 3 and get us back at 5:30. It was annoying having to run back and forth to get on the right shuttles rather than having the combo tour that I had originally booked. I'm not sure what happened with their times, but I wasn't happy that I didn't get the tour that I had booked. I don't recommend unless you are very flexible with your times in port.

Juneau TourAn enjoyable tour with a local " First Nations " guide who was very informative and interesting. Only drawback was having to clear the bus windows of condensation throughout the journey, with kitchen roll.

Medenhall was enoughThanks for the tour. In hindsight if I were to do it again, I think I would just take the trip to the glacier. A lot of the information given on the city tour was repeated on the glacier tour. And the glacier tour on it's own could be bought for just $10. It was wonderful when we got there.

Will we make it back to the ship in time? What if we don't?

Answer: We've never left anyone behind and only schedule tours that work well with your cruise ship's itinerary. We leave plenty of cushion so you can confidently book your trips independently.

What if our ship is delayed or doesn't make it into port? Refund?

Answer: It's very rare that a ship is delayed into port, but in those cases we will try our best to work with you to reschedule the tour to a later time. If that is not a possibility or your ship doesn't make it into port, we will of course refund the full cost of the tour.

What should we wear and bring?

Answer: This tour operates rain or shine, and rain is common as we lie in a temperate rainforest! For comfort, we typically recommend long pants, closed-toed shoes and a waterproof jacket. Some guests choose to bring a small bag or backpack along to store extra layers, a bottle of water and cameras.

What if we want to spend more time at the glacier?

Answer: This narrated tour does operate on a schedule which allocates 45 minutes at Mendenhall Glacier. This tour is designed to leave you with time for other activities in the day and we find this is sufficient time for most guests, but if you would prefer to have more time, there are hop-on shuttles that operate every half-hour which you can reserve upon arrival to Juneau.

What other tours pair well with this one?

Answer: The 2.5 hour time frame of this tour allows you to book another excursion before or after. We usually recommend the Alaska Zipline Tour if you are up for adventure. Just under 4 hours, it works for many cruise ship schedules. Booking these 2, you get all of the Juneau highlights along with the #1 rated ziplining tour on TripAdvisor.
