This in-depth experience takes you on a 30-minute flight outside of Ketchikan, to escape the cruise ship crowds and afford you the opportunity of spotting some of Alaska’s most elusive locals. The Traitor’s Cove Bear Viewing Tour is the longest experiences bear watching Ketchikan offers, allowing you plenty of time to explore the Tongass National Rainforest and the Margarete Creek Bear Viewing platform with your naturalist guide. Watching as Black Bears dive in the rushing water to retrieve their salmon feast, and keep your eyes peeled for the bald eagles who also like to take advantage of the peak of Alaska’s salmon run. This is certainly one bear viewing Ketchikan tour that you won’t want to forget your camera on!

Please note: Because bears are wild animals, we cannot guarantee sightings.

Your four and a half hour Traitor’s Cove Bear Viewing tour begins with convenient pickup right by the cruise docks for transportation to the waterfront base. Here, you’ll receive a short safety briefing before loading up in your 6 to 10 passenger aircraft for a scenic flight across Revillagigedo Island to Traitor’s Cove. Upon arrival, you’ll load up in a van with your knowledgeable guide for a 1-mile drive along a forest service road. From here, it’s just a short nature walk along a boardwalk before the real fun begins, wildlife sightings! Because of its position above a salmon-filled creek, Margarete Creek Bear Viewing Platform is one of the premier places for bear watching Ketchikan offers. And it’s not just bears that you’ll see, as you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for the Alaskan salmon as they swim their way upstream, and the other animals taking advantage of the feast including bald eagles and other native bird species. With limited forest service permitting and 3 hours spent on site, the Traitor’s Cove Bear Viewing tour is an exclusive one you’ll certainly remember for a lifetime.

Are we guaranteed to see bears?

Answer: No. Although most parties do, in fact, see multiple bears at Traitor's cove, we can't know with certainly that they'll be present at the time of the tour.

What is the best time of year for seeing bears?

Answer: This tour operates during the annual salmon run from August 1st-September 30th. Bears inhabit the area and fish in this creek throughout the summer and early fall months.

Can you see wildlife from the plane?

Answer: If you have sharp eyes, it's certainly possible to see wildlife on the mountains below. The plane flies low enough to distinguish individual animals, but of course the pilots have to respect local wildlife so it's not a direct objective of the flightseeing portion of this tour.

    How big are the planes?

Answer: There are a few types of planes used for the tour, and you'll typically be in a group of 6-10 guests on the flight. Everyone gets a window seat on these flights.

What should we wear and bring?

Answer: For comfort, we typically recommend long pants, closed-toed shoes and a jacket, as the air temperature will be a few degrees cooler than the ground temperature. Since you'll be doing some hiking, tennis shoes or boots and a rain jacket is advisable as well.

Do the flights ever get canceled due to weather?

Answer: Yes, safety is a number one priority so weather conditions are taken into account each day. In certain cases, the weather can lift and a slight delay will still allow the flight to continue. However, if a flight is canceled completely due to weather circumstances, you will receive a refund.

What if our ship is delayed or doesn't make it into port? Refund?

Answer: It's very rare that a ship is delayed into port, but in those cases, we will try our best to work with you to reschedule the tour to a later time. If that is not a possibility or your ship doesn't make it into port, we will refund you.
