Fun for the whole family, the Juneau Sled Dog Discovery is your chance to actively participate in Alaska’s state sport of dogsled racing! Meet the huskies and their professional mushers who compete in the annual winter races, take a thrilling one-mile dogsled ride through the Tongass National Forest as part of the huskies’ summer training regime, and help train the athletes of the future by playing with dozens of roly-poly, utterly adorable husky puppies! The Juneau Sled Dog Discovery excursion runs for 2 1/2 hours, including scenic drives to and from the dog camp through the Tongass National Forest from the cruise docks to Douglas Island. Juneau dog sledding is a wonderful way to experience a tradition deeply embedded in Alaskan history and culture, to see the amazing bond between mushers and their husky teams, and to take a happily dizzying ride through the rainforest as the sturdy huskies set a pace you won’t believe. You’ll have just one regret at the end of this heart-warming Alaskan adventure — that you can’t take a puppy home!

Your Juneau dog sledding adventure takes place at a professional racing dog camp a short drive from the city on beautiful Douglas Island. The teams of 14-16 huskies will be jumping with excitement at your arrival, as they know they are about to race! Once you clamber aboard the custom wheeled sled used for summertime practice racing, your musher will give the signal to start and you will be off and dashing down a forest trail lined with giant spruce and hemlock trees. After your thrilling Juneau Sled Dog Discovery ride, you’ll meet a seasoned dog handler and retired sled dog who will give a lively demonstration of the care and training huskies receive from their mushers and handlers. You’ll also learn about the rigors of winter racing and see the equipment used for dogsledding. Then a short nature walk across a suspension bridge overlooking Fish Creek is followed by time with the husky puppies. These cute and cuddly little pooches adore attention, and your pats and cuddles help them socialize — an important contribution to their future athletic success! Juneau dog sledding will be an adventure that you won’t forget!

Delightful Dog TourSuch a wonderful experience from pick up to drop off. Our guide shared interesting information on our trip to the mushers camp where we met the musher and the dogs before going on a ride of our life with the dogs pulling us along. They reacted so well to all the commands and loved being patted when they had finished. The Iditarod sounds like an amazing feat for man and dog. But the puppies were the best...6 months, 6 weeks and 2 week olds. So cuddly.

Nice tour for all ages!My kids loved the "best rollercoaster in Alaska" dog sled ride. My wife and I enjoyed learning about the Iditarod and holding the puppies. It was pouring rain, but the staff made the best of it!

How long is this excursion, and is transportation to and from your camp included?

Answer: All of our Juneau excursions include transportation to and from your cruise ship dock. The entire excursion (dock to dock) is about 2.5 hours.

Do I get to drive the sled?

Answer: No one knows the dogs like their mushers, for this reason, passengers are not allowed to drive the sled. Driving the sled, as well as keeping the dogs in line, takes skills and knowledge that is only acquired through experience.

How long is the sled ride? Is it bumpy?

Answer: The sled ride is about a mile long. Sometimes, the ride can be a little bumpy, but our guides are usually able to avoid the bumps well enough. The speed, as well as the exact timing, of the ride is dependent upon both the dogs’ performance as well as the weather on the day of your visit. So, there is truly no way for us to say exactly how fast the sled will go on any given run.

How many people will fit on the sled?

Answer: Six guests, plus the musher, go together on the sled. We normally run more than one sled at a time, so we can easily accommodate larger groups.

Is the sled ride on snow?

Answer: In both Skagway and Juneau, our excursion takes place on the ground in the woods, and we use a customized summertime wheeled sled. Our summertime sleds are a great way to experience mushing without the cold temperatures and heavy snow of wintertime Alaska.
