Whale Watching & Mendenhall Glacier Tour

Arriving

There are two things you definitely need to experience while you’re in Juneau: whale watching and getting up close to a glacier. This Juneau whale watch and glacier tour is an unbelievable way to do both in a single excursion (helping keep your Alaska shore excursions cheap)! Whale watching in Juneau Alaska is an unforgettable experience, and this tour offers guaranteed sightings of these giants of the deep. You’ll have two hours aboard a customized whale-watching vessel to view massive humpback whales breaching the surface, as well as sea lions, seals, orcas, porpoises, eagles, and innumerable other sea birds. The specially designed boats offer uninterrupted viewing from an outdoor deck or indoor heated cabin. Then, after your amazing experience whale watching in Juneau Alaska, it’s time to head to majestic Mendenhall, the world’s only drive-up glacier. Here, you’ll be entranced by the beauty of the crystal-blue glacier and by your untamed wilderness surroundings. Plus you can explore some of the nature trails in the area at your own pace and pay a visit to the visitor center, where you’ll find a wealth of fascinating information.

Your double Juneau whale watch and glacier adventure begins with convenient pick-up near the cruise docks for a short drive to Auke Bay, with your guide providing an entertaining narrative as you drive through downtown Juneau, Alaska’s capital city. Once you reach the water, it’s anchors aweigh as you head out into the Inside Passage (and prime whale watching waters!). When your captain spots a whale, the motors will be shut down and the boat allowed to drift. The whale watching boats are not allowed to directly approach the whales, but with the motors off these gentle giants often come closer of their own accord! After two hours of stunning wildlife viewing, your vessel will return to harbor and you’ll step aboard a bus for the short drive to Mendenhall Glacier. After you’ve had your fill of exploring this natural wonder, simply hop aboard one of the half-hourly shuttles that runs throughout the day and hitch a ride back to the cruise docks. This Juneau whale watch and glacier experience is a great value, one that helps you combine Alaska shore excursions cheap, and is a family friendly tour everyone will enjoy! Amazing sitesWe were taken on a bus by Lenny from town to the Mendenhall glacier where we had approx 40 minutes to view the glacier.
Lenny was informative and amusing. We could happily have had more time at the glacier in order for us to do the trail to Nugget Falls.
The views of Mendenhall glacier were breathtaking.
We were then picked up by another bus and taken to the marina for the Whale watching tour. It was a brand new boat with great views available for all guests.
Captain Steve, Jason and aquatic biologist Gill were all friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.
We had multiple sightings of Humpbacks which was fantastic.

Awsum Humpback whale watch and Mendenhall GlacierCapt Dirk, Jason, and Mark were great hosts on our whale watch. Despite the rain, we had a great show! We saw several whales and the marine biologist was able to show us photos of 2 of the whales we saw. The demo with the model whale was great. We saw eagles and sea lions.
We went to Mendenhall Glacier after the whale watch. We had as much time there as we wanted. We hiked to the falls. The visitor center was very crowded, but the views where awsum.
Both bus drivers to and from whale watch were very friendly and provided great info!
This trip was comparable to the Princess ship itinerary but cheaper. Our boat was less crowded vs the ships excursion giving us better views/access to see the wild life.

Great day and tour of JuneauI did your whale watching and glacier tour. We were taken to the glacier first for not very long, then picked up for whale watching. It was a great day.. We saw whales and an ORCA. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable and there were only about 20 on our tour. Afterwards bus took those of use wanting to go back to the glacier so we could hike. then picked up a bus to come back to town. All very easy. I took this our on 9/6. Suggestion: Make it clear on the tour description that the glacier is first followed by the whale watching. It didn't make any difference in the long run cause we went back, but a couple other of us were not aware this was the order of the tour. Thanks!

We saw whales and a beautiful glacier! We had a wonderful tour driver, Coach, who told us about the area. He drove us to Mendenhall Glacier. The glacier was beautiful. We then went to the harbor for a whale watching tour. It was cold and rainy so we were glad to be inside the boat. On the way out we were told that there was only a 10% chance we would see Orca. Wow, we saw Orcas breach. We also saw humpback whales breach. We saw Flame and Hilda, humpback whales. The two girls on our boat were so outgoing and told us about both kinds of whales. They were as excited as we were when sighting the whales. We had a whale of a time on our tour.

Great Whale Watching ExperienceCaptain Ben and Emily were a good team on our very successful whale-watching adventure. We saw 7 whales! With some luck, the captain was able to get us very close to them, and we got amazing pictures and video. Along the way, we learned many interesting facts about whales.
The crew seemed to really like their job and to care about providing us with a good experience.
Snack(s) were granola bars, gummy snacks, and water, which was fine for my 4 year old, so no complaints there.
My only actual complaint and reason for giving 4 stars instead of 5, is that I would have liked to spend more time at the glacier. By the time we arrived to the glacier, we had less than 40 minutes to walk the trails, take pictures, go in the gift shop area, etc., and it was just not enough time. We felt incredibly rushed, which is definitely not the best circumstances if you're a party traveling with older folks.

However, all in all, a beautiful sight-seeing, whale-watching boat ride that I would recommend.

Great tour guideOur tour guide, Emily Sharp, was awesome! She was enthusiastic and warm in her interaction with us. She is so knowledgeable of whales and shared other interesting information about life in Alaska as we asked questions. Seeing the whales in person was quite an experience. We had a threesome swim near and past our boat and then take their dive. Not a guaranteed occurrence, so that was exciting.

Jacob is a STAR!!The Glacier was beautiful but to see a pod of 12 hump back whales was just awesome!! Our guide Jacob was so knowledgeable and charismatic. I cam away with a wealth of knowledge regarding the whales and many other Alaskan wildlife and natural features. He was totally entertaining. Jordan was a good captain in locating and steering with the whales but on the return trip he decided to follow in the wake of another boat. The bumps really traumatized the backs of a couple of elderly passengers. It is important to be aware of the limitations of your customers.

Whale Watch in JuneauBefore we even had time to get cameras ready we saw 4 whales. I am bad with names but the crew was awesome. They were knowledgeable about the area and the whales. We got to observe bubble feeding and it was very incredible. We even saw the seals hanging out on the buoy. The drivers of the buses were also informative. The glacier was also spectacular. Nugget Falls was breathtaking. I did feel a little rushed as the last bus leaving only left us time to walk to the falls and back. Great tour.

Wonderful team, great boat, Stellar Whale ViewingWe booked this excursion at the Juneau stop on our Honeymoon cruise to Alaska. We loved it! The staff was friendly, down-to-earth and knowledgeable. The boat is beautiful with great viewing and we saw about 5 Humpback whales on our stop. It was a cold day and the heaters inside were fantastic. I've been whale watching in many places and on varying budgets and I feel this smaller company can definitely compare to the larger more expensive tours. Definitely worthwhile and worth every penny. Would highly recommend!

Whale Watching and Mendenhall Glacier ComboGreat tour! Whale watching with Captain Ben, Jerry and Lukas - all very friendly and informative. We saw a few whales where other tourist boats where, and then our Captain took off in search of a more 'private' whale viewing and we witnesses a whale feeding, came up twice straight up - was wonderful to see.

Mendenhall Glacier is also a must to see. From this area you can not only witness the magnificent Glacier but also the Nugget Falls and can go on nature trails - we even saw 5 bears!

Totally recommended. Thank you to all involved in the tour.

Just OKToo small a boat -- everyone crammed in on benches. Made it difficult to see. If your idea of a "light snack" is gummy bears, be my guest. The tour guides were friendly but could have been more informative about the area's wildlife.

Whales and GlaciersCan't say enough about how wonderful the tours were. From the bus drivers to the crew of the boat, everyone was truly friendly, informative, and made the trip memorable. We saw whales and orcas on the trip and it was absolutely amazing. I was able to take plenty of pictures. The glacier and waterfall were beautiful. While we weren't able to walk all the paths at the park, we were able to take some beautiful pictures there also. I'd highly recommended Alaska Shore Tours in Juneau.

Will we make it back to the ship in time? What if we don't?

Answer: We've never left anyone behind and only schedule tours that work well with your cruise ship's itinerary. We leave plenty of cushion so you can confidently book your trips independently.

Is there a restroom on board the boat?

Answer: Yes, there is a small restroom on board the boat and also an opportunity before leaving at Auke Bay Harbor. We certainly recommend using the facilities at Auke Bay before leaving as the onboard restrooms are quite small.

What if our ship is delayed or doesn't make it into port? Refund?

Answer: It's very rare that a ship is delayed into port, but in those cases we will try our best to work with you to reschedule the tour to a later time. If that is not a possibility or your ship doesn't make it into port, we will of course refund the full cost of the tour.

What should we wear and bring?

Answer: This tour operates rain or shine, and rain is common as we lie in a temperate rainforest! For comfort, we typically recommend long paints, closed-toed shoes, and a waterproof jacket. Some guests choose to bring a small bag or backpack along to store extra layers, a bottle of water, and cameras.

How can you guarantee that we will see whales?

Answer: The captain and crew are out there everyday and understanding the whales' patterns and behavior is their job! Whales are creatures of habit like us and prefer certain feeding locations.

How many people are on this tour?

Answer: There are a few different boats used for this tour. The enclosed jet boats seat up to 28 people and the larger catamarans can accommodate up to 49 people (if the tour is at full capacity).
