Out of all the wildlife excursions in Ketchikan, the Eagles, Raptors & Rainforest Experience offers the most in-depth and up-close participation! The Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary is home to a variety of native birds in a private 40-acre reserve. Your naturalist guide leads you on a half-mile walk through the lush rainforest and boardwalk overlooking Herring Creek. During the salmon spawning season, bears and seals are commonly spotted feeding here, so have your cameras ready! At the flight auditorium, enjoy a 30-minute presentation about the unique physical adaptations and behaviors of the birds while they fly right before your eyes! You’ll also visit the raptor courtyard for more close up photographs of these incredible birds, as well as a Q&A with the handler. Lastly, enjoy some free time at the center before returning to town. You can explore the historic Lumber Company Saw Mill and the totem pole park, see a blacksmith at work, as well as shop for locally-made goods in the General Store. If you’re looking for intimate and exciting wildlife excursions in Ketchikan, then the Eagles, Raptors & Rainforest Experience is for you!

Your wildlife excursion begins with pickup at the cruise ship dock and a narrated 8-mile coastal drive to Herring Cove. From here, your friendly naturalist guide leads you on an informative walk through the rainforest, pointing out the native flora and fauna. Once at the flight auditorium and followed by the raptor courtyard, enjoy an incredibly up-close presentation with the various owls, hawks, and eagles. The Alaska Raptor Center’s amazing recovery efforts have actually moved the Bald Eagle off the endangered species list. A portion of all proceeds benefits their rehabilitation of wild birds, education, and research. Furthermore, this 3-hour tour includes time for you to explore the other fascinating exhibits at the center before your return transport back to town. The Eagles, Raptors & Rainforest Experience will leave you with lasting fond memories of your time in Ketchikan!

For other wildlife excursions in Ketchikan, consider the Black Bear & Wildlife Exploration or the Bering Sea Crab Fishermen’s Tour! Additionally, compliment this excursion with the Whale Watching Tour in Juneau and the Sled Dog & Musher’s Camp experience in Skagway!

    What should I wear?

Answer: This tour operates in all weather conditions. Comfortable walking shoes, layered clothing and a waterproof jacket are recommended. Rain ponchos are available, if necessary. Don't forget your camera!

What is the best time of year for bear viewing?

Answer: Bears are most commonly seen during the salmon run. Typically, July and August are the best times for bear viewing in this area, but they can be spotted throughout the season.

What if our ship is delayed or doesn't make it into port? Refund?

Answer: It's very rare that a ship is delayed into port, but in those cases, we will try our best to work with you to reschedule the tour to a later time. If that is not a possibility or your ship doesn't make it into port, we will of course refund the full cost of the tour.

When should we reserve this tour? Can we book it when we arrive to Ketchikan?

Answer: This tour, like many others, operates with limited space so advanced reservations are recommended. Often times, last minute reservations or day-of arrivals cannot be accommodated, so we always say that it's best to book the tour as soon as you have an idea that this is the one for you.
