For More Information

Mon - Sun 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Escape the crowds and surround yourself with incredible wildlife opportunities on the stunning Wildlife Safari & Bear Viewing. This exciting safari actually takes you over to Haines on a Fast Ferry ride through the magnificent Lynn Canal, so you can beat the crowds and see some of wild Alaska. From Haines, you will venture into the Chilkoot Valley which is home to numerous bears and other exciting animals, all situated under rugged glaciated peaks. Keep your eyes trained and your hands ready to grab the nearest pair of high powered binoculars on this one of a kind trip among Skagway day tours!

Your Wildlife Safari & Bear Viewing experience begins with a 45 minute Fast Ferry from Skagway to Haines, which affords you plenty of time to take in the stunning landscape around you. From here, your narrated drive with an experienced naturalist will begin, with your first stop being the historic Fort Seward, the first military base in Alaska. As your group leaves Fort Seward, your wildlife viewing opportunities begin! You will journey through the magnificent Chilkoot Valley along the Lynn Canal, where you will be able to see marine life such as seals, sea lions, porpoises, and even whales. Once you reach the Chilkoot River, you will be in prime bear viewing location, as the huge salmon run’s that come through the area create a feast for hungry brown bears! This area is what gives the Wildlife Safari & Bear Viewing tour its name, as you will have the opportunity to see bears, mountain goats, salmon, river otters, bald eagles, and an abundance of migratory birds through the powerful scopes and binoculars provided by your guides. After spending the better part of your tour in this area, you will return to Haines for a picnic lunch on a private beach, before heading to the Chilkat river to catch a glimpse of all 5 species of wild Pacific Salmon. This is certainly one of the Skagway day tours that will leave you with true Alaskan memories that will last a lifetime!

Please Note: This tour does not begin operation until July 21st to maximize your potential to see bears.

Wildlife safari and bear viewingMy husband and I were the only two on the tour and it made for an even more enjoyable visit since it was personalized to our likings. Our guide, Trevor, was the best tour guide and was exceptionally friendly, funny, and knowledgeable. We were ecstatic to see brown bears (a momma bear and three cubs) along the water and it was comical when one cub came up to an area that had life vests and started to swat at them. We saw bald eagles and got a tour of Haines and were able to enjoy the beautiful wildlife and scenery. I would definitely recommend this tour and if you can, ask for Trevor.

Wildlife SafariThis would have received 5 stars if not for our bad experience before the tour. The communication was terrible! Our ship berthed a solid half an hour away from the meeting point (directions were vague) with no plans to transport us there. We couldn't get through to anybody to let them know how difficult this was going to be, which was very distressful. When we FINALLY got through to the office, we were told we were going to have to walk. I pretty much cried all of the way to the meeting point, fearing we were going to surely miss our tour. When we finally got to the boat harbor there was nobody around. We were convinced we had missed the tour, a couple of phone calls later, we found that someone had actually gone to pick us up? where is the communication guys? I think it was another 40 minutes or so before we even got on to the ferry anyway! why put us under so much stress? The tour guides (2 young ladies) and scenery were exceptional, so the lack of professionalism at the start was disappointing.

    • Therese, we are very sorry for the experience you had! Providing our guests with clear instructions for meeting their guides is very important to us. Looking at your file, I do see that you were emailed a map with walking instructions at the time of your booking but we do regret that these instructions came off as vague and that we were hard to reach by phone the morning of your tour. We have several agents on the phones, but on busy days it can take a couple of tries to get through. We are, however, very happy to hear that you did enjoy your tour and we hope that the experience beforehand does not affect that. Thank you for your feedback, we will review our meeting instructions to ensure they are clear and concise for future guests.

Wildlife safari and bear viewingOur tour itself was very nice. The tour guides were very informative and great. We were able to see a mama bear and her two cubs, despite the rainy weather. However, the organization of before and after the tour was terrible. We were given the wrong meeting place, we wasted so much time standing around before loading the ferry to Haines - at least 30-45 minutes and then wasted another 15-20 minutes sitting on the ferry waiting for a late tour to load. We were on a cruise and our time in Skagway is very limited. Time is valuable and this tour company obviously doesn't value its customers time.

Wildlife SafariEmail instructions clearly said where to meet but they were not there. They picked us up 1/2hr late. Fortunately, once we got to Haines all was forgiven as we were the only ones on the tour and got to spend a lot of time with Speedi and her 3 cubs. Our guide was over the top accommodating to us!

Bear ExcursionWe loved our bear excursion. Trevor was a great guide. We loved the scenery and seeing the wildlife. We saw not only bears, but eagles and goats up in the mountain, but of course, the mama bear with her three cubs was the highlight!
