Guided Passenger Van Wildlife and Bear Viewing Tour
Description
This is a 3.5-hour land-based wildlife tour on Chichagof Island, and it’s one of the best ways to look for brown bears without needing to hike or get on a boat.
You’ll ride in a comfortable van with a small group, which makes it easy to stop quickly when something is spotted. The goal is simple: go where the bears are most active that day. Your guide keeps track of recent sightings and adjusts the route as needed, whether that means checking stream crossings, forest edges, or open coastal areas.
A lot of the experience comes down to patience and timing. Sometimes you’ll be quietly watching a stretch of road or riverbank, and then suddenly there’s movement, a bear walking through the brush or feeding along the shoreline. It’s not rushed, and that’s what makes it feel real.
Along the way, you’ll likely see more than just bears. Bald eagles are common, usually perched high in the trees. You might spot Sitka black-tailed deer near the forest edge, and there are often shorebirds out by the water.
The full 3.5 hours really helps. Wildlife doesn’t follow a schedule, so having extra time gives you a better shot at meaningful sightings instead of just a quick pass-through.
There’s no hiking involved, and stops are made from the roadside at safe viewing distances. It’s a good fit for families, photographers, or anyone who wants a straightforward, comfortable way to experience Alaska’s wildlife.
