Description
This trip is a 5-hour private halibut fishing experience out on the waters around Ketchikan. It’s a good mix of relaxing time on the boat and hands-on fishing once you reach the right spots.
You’ll start by heading out from the harbor, passing small islands, forested shoreline, and working boats along the way. The ride itself is part of the experience, usually calm, with plenty to look at while you make your way toward deeper fishing grounds.
Once you arrive, your guide will show you exactly how to drop your line and work it along the bottom. Everyone gets their own rod, so you’re actively fishing the whole time. Halibut are the main target, and when one bites, you’ll feel it; it’s strong, heavy, and takes some effort to bring up. It’s a fun challenge, even if it’s your first time.
You might also catch other species like rockfish, cod, or lingcod, which keeps things interesting throughout the trip. In between bites, there’s time to take in the surroundings, watch for seabirds, and just enjoy being out on the water.
The boat has an enclosed cabin if you want a break from the weather, along with basic comforts to keep the day easygoing. Since it’s a private trip, everything moves at your group’s pace.
By the end, your catch can be sent for processing, so you don’t have to worry about logistics, just enjoy the experience.
