Description
If you’re looking to try salmon fishing in Ketchikan, this 4-hour trip is a solid, straightforward way to do it. You’ll head out on a private boat with your group, and within a short ride, you’re already in productive fishing waters, no long run required.
Once you’re out there, your guide will set up the gear and start trolling using downriggers. This lets you fish at different depths, which is important since salmon don’t always stay in one spot. You don’t need any experience for this. If it’s your first time, you’ll be shown exactly what to do. If you’ve fished before, you can just jump right in.
Most of the trip is spent with lines in the water, waiting for that moment when a rod bends, and the reel starts moving. When that happens, things pick up quickly. You’ll take turns bringing fish in, with help along the way if needed.
The boat has an enclosed cabin, so you can step inside if it gets chilly, and rain gear is available if the weather turns. Snacks and water are provided, but it’s still a good idea to dress in layers.
At the end of the trip, if you’ve kept any fish, everything can be arranged to send them to a local processor. Overall, it’s a relaxed, hands-on experience that gives you a real taste of fishing in Southeast Alaska.
