Description

Get behind the wheel of a classic Jeep Wrangler 4 x 4 and negotiate the rugged back roads of Revillagigedo Island before paddling your own Indian-style canoe across Lake Harriet Hunt and hiking a shaded nature trail through lush rainforest on the exhilarating Backcountry Jeep and Canoe Safari! This Ketchikan off-the-beaten-path adventure is fun for the whole family and takes you into remote places of exceptional scenic beauty where you can enjoy your wilderness experience from three different perspectives. Judder over the back roads and mountainside logging trails while your Jeep Wrangler takes all the punishment, grab a paddle and step into a 20-passenger canoe to glide across a serene mountain lake, and then hike to a remote camp base for a hearty Alaskan meal of smoked salmon and clam chowder amid towering old-growth forest. The Backcountry Jeep and Canoe Safari is triple the fun and triple the adventure, a perfect opportunity to experience Ketchikan off the beaten path!

For the first stage of your four-hour adventure, you’ll be paired with three other passengers per Jeep, with the opportunity to change drivers along the way as the route takes you over the mountain roads of the Tongass National Forest. Your guide will lead the way as you head further from Ketchikan off the beaten path, communicating via two-way radio, and stops along the way to provide photo opportunities at scenic overlooks. On arrival at the shores of Lake Harriet Hunt, board a 37-foot canoe for a gentle paddle across this beautiful and remote stretch of water. On the other side of the lake your guide will lead the way into the forest and along a nature trail to the cook camp, where your Backcountry Jeep and Canoe Safari adventure concludes with a relaxing stop, servings of delicious smoked salmon and clam chowder, and a choice of hot beverages. What’s more, this conveniently timed excursion will then put you back in town with enough time to explore on your own. Want to see the true Ketchikan off the beaten path? This unique combo package is your chance!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need previous canoe experience? Is it safe?
This tour is a great entry-level canoe tour and perfect for first-timers or those with experience. The canoes are 37-foot vessels that can seat up to 20 guests at at time and are incredibly stable in the water.
What if it rains? Do the trips get canceled?
Ketchikan is in the heart of a temperate rainforest, and we would never do anything if we stopped for the rain. Please do not let the possibility of rain deter you from booking. Southeast Alaska is at its most beautiful on misty rainy days.
Is there a weight limit for the canoes?
Over the years we have seen all shapes and sizes! We do not have a set weight limit, but please keep in mind that guests will need to be able to get in and out of the canoe on their own accord as well as be comfortable seated in a canoe for a total of 2 hours (1 hour each way).
What if our cruise ship's schedule is canceled or delayed?
We will try our best to work with you to reschedule the tour to a later time. If that is not a possibility or your ship doesn't make it into port, then you will receive a refund, less any non-refundable fees.
