Description

Wildlife viewing, impressive totem carving, and a fascinating tour of a historic sawmill are just some of the highlights of the Wildlife Sanctuary and Totem Park Tour, one of the best Ketchikan Alaska excursions for wildlife enthusiasts of all ages. Located just eight miles from Ketchikan along a scenic coastal drive, the 40-acre Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary is a private reserve home to abundant animal life, much of which is attracted by the major salmon runs in Eagle Creek. Depending on the day and season, you may spot black bears, seals, deer, minks, and martens, as well as a variety of birdlife. Take a guided walk accompanied by a naturalist through dense forest and along an elevated wooden boardwalk overlooking grassy wetlands, visit the historic Herring Bay Lumber Company sawmill and marvel at the skill of a master native totem carver as he transforms a log of red cedar into a remarkable work of art: a favorite among Ketchikan Alaska excursions, the Wildlife Sanctuary and Totem Park Tour has it all!

As with our other Ketchikan Alaska excursions, all transportation is provided, with convenient pick-up close to the cruise docks in downtown Ketchikan. From here you’ll enjoy a scenic eight-mile coastal drive (with informative narration!) to the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary and Totem Park at picturesque Herring Cove. The tour runs for 2 ¾ hours, including transfers, so you’ll have plenty of time here to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings, listen to the birdsong, and soak up your guide’s knowledge of local flora and fauna, history, and Native culture. Finish up your visit with complimentary refreshments and snacks, including Alaskan smoked salmon, at the center’s general store, before heading back to Ketchikan with time left in the day to explore this charming Alaskan town and the historic Creek Street district. If you’re amazed by Alaskan animals, the Wildlife Sanctuary and Totem Park adventure could be the tour for you!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year for bear viewing?
Much of the local wildlife including the eagles and bears centers around the salmon run. Typically, late-July through September are the best times for bear viewing in this area, but they can be spotted throughout the season. Though we can't predict Mother Nature's schedule, it's always a pleasure to see bears when they are out!
What is the walking path like? Is it suitable for wheelchairs?
The 3/4-mile walking portion of the tour is on a well-maintained forest trail, with compressed gravel as well as an elevated wooden boardwalk. Most of the trail system is flat, however there are short (30 yards) sections with moderate inclines and declines. The walks occur over compressed gravel and wooden boardwalks that are accessible to wheelchair users, but are weather dependent. During periods of heavy rain the trail can be difficult to navigate in a wheelchair. Wheelchairs are not provided on site, however with at least 24 hours notice we can provide an able-bodied person to push/assist anyone in a wheelchair.
When should we reserve this tour? Can we book it when we arrive to Ketchikan?
This tour, like many others, does operate with limited spacing so advanced reservations are recommended. Often times, last minute reservations or day-of arrivals cannot be accommodated, so we always say that it's best to book the tour as soon as you have an idea that this is the one for you.
What should I wear?
This tour operates in all weather conditions. Comfortable walking shoes, layered clothing, and waterproof jacket are recommended. A rain poncho can be provided if you need one. Don’t forget your sunglasses and camera!
What if our cruise ship's schedule is canceled or delayed?
We will try our best to work with you to reschedule the tour to a later time. If that is not a possibility or your ship doesn't make it into port, then you will receive a refund, less any non-refundable fees.
