Juneau icefield helicopter tours are the best possible way to experience the breadth and beauty of this awe-inspiring region, as they provide the opportunity to see forty large glaciers and around one hundred smaller ones! The Icefield Helicopter Excursion is the most popular of the helicopter tours in Juneau and features a full hour of unforgettable flightseeing. Your helicopter heads for the Herbert Glacier, where your pilot guide will gently touch down on the glacier itself, shut down the engines, and conduct you on a fascinating and informative walk in this other-worldly, frozen environment. The remote beauty of frozen rivers of ice backed by rugged, ice-capped mountain peaks is truly spell-binding, and with helicopter tours in Juneau like this one, you get to experience a 360-degree aerial view, take a walk on a glacier, experience the thrill of a helicopter ride, and encounter a heart-stopping landing right on one of the largest glaciers in the Juneau Icefield!

Dock-to-dock transportation is included, and just a short ride from the cruise docks takes you to the helicopter base, where you’ll be greeted by your pilot/guide and taken through some brief safety instructions. If this is your first helicopter flight, any butterflies will soon be settled as you take off and become totally absorbed in the breathtaking beauty of the landscape below. Juneau icefield helicopter tours are on the bucket list for most travelers to Alaska, and the Icefield Helicopter Excursion is perfect for those who want to experience the thrill of a helicopter flight and glacier landing without additional activities such as dogsledding or airboat rides.

For a helicopter adventure combined with glacier dogsledding, you might consider our Helicopter & Dogsled Glacier Excursion.

Fantastic Experience!I think of all of the trips, cruises, and excursions we've been on, this was the best! I've never been in a helicopter (my husband has) and I wasn't 't afraid or worried at all. It was a very smooth ride. Rob, was an excellent pilot and tour guide. It was kind of a rainy day, and the ice was slippery, but he made sure we were all safe and no one fell on the ice. Seeing Mendenhall Glacier from close in the air and actually standing on it was fantastic! It was a great experience and well worth it!

Jordan, from Alaska Shore Tours, was very helpful in booking this tour for us. When we got to the airfield, everyone there was very courteous and helpful. They made sure weight was distributed evenly on the helicopters. Helped with the glacier boots, made sure our belongings were locked up and we were all in the right places until we boarded the helicopters. They were all very efficient!

An exciting and unusual perspective...Worth every penny. The pilot was wonderful and the trip was exciting and unique. To see the blue ice up close and personal is incredible. Just as amazing - this tour allows one to get a true sense for just how incredibly large the glaciers are. Even if you think you've got an accurate assessment going in, you may be wonderfully surprised. Thank you for this priceless experience for my son, my husband and I, as well as a lovely couple and their wheelchair-bound elderly mother.

Totally worth it!The weather was iffy the day we arrived in Juneau but the trip was not canceled. We had a super pilot named Mitch with loads of experience and he made us feel safe. The glacier was amazing and slippery but we had fun and I drank the glacier water. Bring a small plastic bottle with you to gather water. Then you can share! Also, you will get ice boots to cover whatever footwear you have on.

August 6, 2018We were the last tour allowed out that day. The weather was foul with low clouds and rain. We were concerned the trip would be disappointing because of lowered visibility. We could not have been more wrong. The clouds and drizzle made for an eerie experience and it was terrific! Well worth the money! Do yourself a favor, take the tour regardless of the conditions!

    How many passengers per helicopter?

Answer: Each helicopter can seat up to 6 passengers, provided the weight and balance calculations work out in each aircraft.

What if my tour group is larger than 6 people?

Answer: There are several helicopters available at the base and can make accommodations for larger groups with advance notice. If your group exceeds 6 passengers and requires the use of multiple aircraft, we instruct the pilots to coordinate landing locations on the glacier so that you can have your landing time together.

Why do you land on the Herbert Glacier?

Answer: We find the Herbert Glacier to be of particular charm and seclusion. Most passengers on our helicopter tours feel like they’re the only people in the world while on their glacier landing, and we like to keep it unique and exclusive for everyone.

Will the pilot get out with us?

Answer: Definitely. Your pilot will act as your guide for your entire helicopter tour, including the time you’ll spend on the glacier. This allows for a truly focused tour experience.

Will we see wildlife on the tour?

Answer: There is a good chance wildlife will be seen during your tour, either in flight or while on the glacier. However, this is not a wildlife viewing tour and we cannot guarantee you will see wildlife.

Can children come on the tour?

Answer: Absolutely! We are more than happy to accommodate children of all ages and there are several car seats available for customers to use.

What happens if the weather is too bad to fly?

Answer: If the weather is just not cooperating and the pilots determine that it’s too bad to fly, we’ll do our best to reschedule you to a later time of day that works for you. If you choose not to reschedule or we can’t find a time that works for you, our refund policy clearly states that refunds due to weather canceled flights are refunded in full.

What if I need extra help on the tour?

Answer: Your pilot will be with you the entire tour, so they’ll be happy to lend a helping hand whenever necessary. If you require extra assistance, don’t hesitate to contact us ahead of your tour and discuss your particular needs.
