For More Information

Mon - Sun 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Get behind the wheel of a classic Jeep Wrangler 4 x 4 and negotiate the rugged back roads of Revillagigedo Island before paddling your own Indian-style canoe across Lake Harriet Hunt and hiking a shaded nature trail through lush rainforest on the exhilarating Backcountry Jeep and Canoe Safari! This Ketchikan off-the-beaten-path adventure is fun for the whole family and takes you into remote places of exceptional scenic beauty where you can enjoy your wilderness experience from three different perspectives. Judder over the back roads and mountainside logging trails while your Jeep Wrangler takes all the punishment, grab a paddle and step into a 20-passenger canoe to glide across a serene mountain lake, and then hike to a remote camp base for a hearty Alaskan meal of smoked salmon and clam chowder amid towering old-growth forest. The Backcountry Jeep and Canoe Safari is triple the fun and triple the adventure, a perfect opportunity to experience Ketchikan off the beaten path!

For the first stage of your four-hour adventure, you’ll be paired with three other passengers per Jeep, with the opportunity to change drivers along the way as the route takes you over the mountain roads of the Tongass National Forest. Your guide will lead the way as you head further from Ketchikan off the beaten path, communicating via two-way radio, and stops along the way provide for photo opportunities at scenic overlooks. On arrival at the shores of Lake Harriet Hunt, board a 37-foot canoe for a gentle paddle across this beautiful and remote stretch of water. On the other side of the lake your guide will lead the way into the forest and along a nature trail to the cook camp, where your Backcountry Jeep and Canoe Safari adventure concludes with a relaxing stop, servings of delicious smoked salmon and clam chowder, and a choice of hot beverages. What’s more, this conveniently-timed excursion will then put you back in town with enough time to explore on your own. Want to see the true Ketchikan off the beaten path? This unique combo package is your chance!

Amazing experience! This was such a fun family activity! I wish the canoe had been a little longer, but it was still fun. The lake is beautiful and our guide’s commentary made the drive to the lake fun and informative. Then we had the most delicious clam chowder dinner I’ve ever had! I hate clam chowder, but this was amazing! There was also artisan bread with homemade jam &/or salmon dip, crackers, mints, coffee, and delicious hot cocoa. Then we went on a nature walk and learned about the flora and fauna in the surrounding forest. Next, we did our Jeep tour on an actual Jeep trail! We’ve done other Jeep excursions before, but the only thing “Jeep” about them was that they were on paved or dirt roads and you were driving a Jeep. Not so with this one. The guide gave us brief tips for drive speed and how to put them in 4WD for people who may not be familiar. It was such a beautiful drive on a few different trails. There were several stopping points where you could change drivers if you wanted. Seriously, one of our favorite excursions.

Back to NaturePleasant canoe ride with a walk through nature and a native snack. 4 wheel Jeep ride was a blast for our 10-year-old. The views from the top of the mountain are amazing!

Fun but not really what was expected...The canoe trip is literally hopping in the canoe for 10 min (if that) amazing snack then a 10-15 min hike On a premade wood path. Canoe the short distance back. Then get in jeeps (walkie-talkie get a bad signal to talk. Jeep ride was fun. pretty view at the top of the trail. The only wildlife we saw was a deer on the bus ride there. The trail is as wide as the jeep so you don't get to see wildlife. Wasn't what we expected, but we made the best of it.

Beautiful and interestingWe did the canoe adventure with a nature hike. The lake was beautiful and the hike, though on a wood deck path, was interesting. We had a brief time to enjoy a light and delicious snack. The hot chocolate was the best ever! Our guide was Doran and he was amazing. A finer more engaging young man will not be found, he made all the difference in our adventure!

Amazing views and fun off-roadingWe had a great time on this excursion! The views were amazing and the off-roading was fun. Our tour guide's radio wasn't working correctly, so we only heard 1/10th of what he was saying. The nature hike was interesting, but hardly a hike.

How long is this excursion, and is transportation included?

Answer: The total duration of this activity is about 4 hours from start to finish with about 2 hours on the water. The meeting location will be just next to the Ketchikan Visitor's Bureau, which is conveniently situated very close to the cruise docks. Of course, you'll receive detailed meeting instructions and planning information in a confirmation email upon booking.

Do I need previous canoe experience? Is it safe?

Answer: This tour is a great entry-level canoe tour and perfect for first-timers or those with experience. The canoes are 37-foot vessels that can seat up to 20 guests at at time and are incredibly stable in the water.

What should I wear and how should I prepare for this tour?

Answer: No special equipment is necessary for you to bring. Dress warmly and in layers as the temperature can fluctuate throughout the day. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended for the Nature Trail and for your comfort. Life jackets will provided for the canoe portion of the trip.

What if it rains? Do the trips get canceled?

Answer: Ketchikan is in the heart of a temperate rainforest, and we would never do anything if we stopped for the rain. Please do not let the possibility of rain deter you from booking. Southeast Alaska is at its most beautiful on misty rainy days.

Is there a weight limit for the canoes?

Answer: Over the years we have seen all shapes and sizes! We do not have a set weight limit, but please keep in mind that guests will need to be able to get in and out of the canoe on their own accord as well as be comfortable seated in a canoe for a total of 2 hours (1 hour each way).

What if our ship is delayed or doesn't make it into port? Refund?

Answer: It's very rare that a ship is delayed into port, but in those cases, we will try our best to work with you to reschedule the tour to a later time. If that is not a possibility or your ship doesn't make it into port, we will of course refund the full cost of the tour.
