Imagine towering Yosemite-like granite domes reaching thousands of feet skyward from where they stretch out of the sea. Picture bald eagles soaring overhead, dancing in and out of the mist that snakes along the vivid-green mossy cliffs around you. Good news! With our brand-new Misty Fjords Cruise, you can see this stunning, almost alien landscape firsthand on one of the most awe-inspiring shore excursions in Alaska. This dramatic geologic dreamscape, home to seals, countless seabirds, mountain goats, bears, wolves, and even killer whales (!), is perhaps one of the most gorgeous sites in an already gorgeous region, and this gem among Ketchikan Alaska tours lets you experience the wonder up-close and personal!

As with our other Ketchikan Alaska tours, your day on the water begins with pick-up at the cruise docks and transport to Misty Fjords National Monument, where you’ll meet your expert naturalist guide and board a state-of-the-art catamaran designed to give you the best possible views of this magnificent area. Enjoy complimentary food and beverages as you set out into the wild in search of natural wonders! Your guide will answer all your questions as you pass beneath thousand-foot cascading waterfalls and scan the emerald waters below for wildlife. You’ll explore these ancient glacially-carved fjords, sometimes referred to as the “Yosemite of the North,” to your heart’s content, weaving between eagles’ nests, bright green cliff sides, and even enigmatic Native American pictographs! Geology fan? Rejoice, as you’ll even Punchbowl Cove’s basalt columns and a volcanic plug called New Eddystone Rock that rises 200+ feet from the sea! Don’t forget your camera on this tour, one of the very best shore excursions in Alaska for lovers of scenic beauty, as it could be your chance for that hero shot you’ve been searching for! Shore excursions in Alaska simply don’t come more lovely than this one.

  1. 5 out of 5

Our party of 4 greatly enjoyed our tour. We were treated to a bright sunny day. The guides were very nice and informative. The views we encountered were amazing. The trip back was a little long, but that was when we got to see some glimpses of humpbacks. It was a beautiful relaxing journey we will remember forever.

Misty FiordsWe enjoyed this tour. The highlight was following and observing a family of Orcas. We were told this was rather rare to see them all together. There were five - three of them young ones. Water was calm and weather unusually sunny and warm. Probably would have preferred to fly floatplane back rather than cruise back past what we already saw but that was when we saw the Orcas. Highly recommend this tour.

A little unfortunateUnfortunately we had to turn back half way due to float planes not flying. The crew did a great job of showing us some of your local wildlife and made for a pleasant experience.

Made my trip!I went out on a misty fjords cruise on Sunday August 27, 2017. It was awesome!! Captain Dawn and her crew were very welcoming. We had beautiful weather which I hear had been few and far between. As we went up to the fjords the naturalist had wonderful stories and facts about Alaska. I appreciated her personal stories of survival camp. As someone who was on the south side of Chicago in 7th and 8th grade we learned how to spot owl droppings and deer tracks while she was learning how to survive the wilderness!
We saw whales bubblenet feeding!! That was incredible! The fjords were fantastic! After the folks transferring to the floatplanes left, it was so peaceful. This was my first time in Ketchikan and it was the highlight of my trip. Thanks to all of those who helped to make that happen.

Loved this TourOur group of 5 really loved this tour. The boat ride was very smooth and the sights along the way were beautiful. We did just the cruise, not the floatplane combo. Seating inside and out was plentiful and the boat was very clean with a nice restroom. There were hot drinks and juices as well as a muffin and cookie provided. The crew was very friendly and helpful. We had beautiful weather except for a light rain at the very end but I can see where bad weather might make this trip less enjoyable, still that is expected in SE Alaska. Our only issue was some confusion on the part of the tour operator where they were late picking us up and then took us to the wrong location. This was bad because we had one person with limited mobility who had to get in and out of the van twice. The step to the van was about 12 inches even with their platform. Then the ramp down to the dock was very long and extremely steep. I called and asked about these things in advance before purchase and was told there was only a small ramp onto the boat. For most this wouldn't be an issue just be aware if you are traveling with someone who has limited ability. Overall we REALY enjoyed this trip and the quality of the tour far outweighed the rough start. Highly recommended!

Will we make it back to the ship in time? What if we don't?

Answer: We've never left anyone behind and only schedule tours that work well with your cruise ship's itinerary. We leave plenty of cushion so you can confidently book your trips independently.

Do these tours ever get canceled due to weather?

Answer: Typically the Misty Fjords Cruise operates rain or shine. If, by chance, a tour were canceled because of extreme weather, a full refund would of course be issued.

What if our ship is delayed or doesn't make it into port? Refund?

Answer: It's very rare that a ship is delayed into port, but in those cases, we will try our best to work with you to reschedule the tour to a later time. If that is not a possibility or your ship doesn't make it into port, we will of course refund the full cost of the tour.

What should we wear and bring?

Answer: For comfort, we typically recommend long pants and closed-toed shoes. A light jacket and rain coat are also advisable, as weather is often misty and light rain is probable.

What kind of wildlife will we see?

Answer: It's never certain exactly what wildlife you'll see, but killer whales, humpback whales, eagles, black bears, mountain goats, and many other species are often spotted here.

    How big are the boats?

Answer: This tour typically utilizes a 48-passenger catamaran-style boat with both a large exterior viewing deck and interior cabin.

Can we watch from inside if it is cold or rainy?

Answer: Yes. The boats feature a spacious heated cabin with wide windows designed for viewing scenery.

Why is the Misty Fjords Cruise and Flightseeing tour shorter than the Misty Fjords Cruise?

Answer: About halfway through the Misty Fjords Cruise, guests that have signed up for the Cruise & Flightseeing combo will depart at a floating dock and tour the area via floatplane before heading back to HQ. Since the plane can make the return trip more rapidly, it arrives back where the tour began about an hour before the boat.
