55 Minute Flight

1.75 hour total duration with transfers

No Alaskan adventure would be complete without a Ketchikan flightseeing experience soaring above some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. The Misty Fjords Flightseeing experience is our pick of the best of the Ketchikan flightseeing tours and is a truly stunning adventure. Climb aboard one of Alaska’s famous bush planes, the DeHavilland Beaver or Otter, and soar above the magnificent Misty Fjords National Monument, which comprises 2.3 million acres of breathtaking natural beauty and grandeur. You’ll spot deep fjords, crystal lakes, cascading waterfalls, and towering ancient forests cloaking snow-capped peaks, all from an eagle’s-eye view of this vast and dramatically beautiful wilderness. This incredible region is not uninhabited, however… have your binoculars at the ready for a chance at spotting herds of mountain goats, brown and black bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, wolves, moose, and bald eagles as your experienced bush pilot takes you on the flight of a lifetime!

Your Ketchikan flightseeing adventure begins at a pick-up point conveniently located within walking distance of the cruise docks. From here, a short transfer will take you to the plane base, where you’ll receive a short video orientation. Then it’s all aboard the floatplane for a thrilling water take-off! Every passenger has a window seat, so there’s no fear of missing anything as you soar over Ketchikan and towards the towering 3000-foot cliffs carved out by thousands of years of glacial movement. These stunning escarpments mark the entrance to Misty Fjords flightseeing and the beginning of your ultimate wilderness adventure. All the while, your pilot will keep you updated on the sights through noise-canceling headsets. Later, back in Ketchikan, you will still feel like you’re flying high long after your Misty Fjords Flightseeing adventure comes to a close.

With respect for full transparency, we want to let our guests know that there have been tragic fatal accidents on the Misty Fjords flight in years past. While small aircraft is the main mode of transportation in Alaska, there will always be risks. Our operating partner, Taquan Air, takes every precaution to make the most informed decision about flight conditions for that day and will cancel the tour if weather poses any threat. Their pilots are extensively trained, monitor weather conditions closely, and fly with at least 4 miles of visibility. The company has also voluntarily adopted safety practices beyond those required by federal standards.

Do the flights ever get canceled due to weather?

Answer: Yes, safety is a number one priority so weather conditions are taken into account each day. In certain cases, the weather can lift and a slight delay will still allow the flight to continue. However, if a flight is canceled completely due to weather circumstances, you will receive a refund.

Is the misty fjords flight safe?

Answer: With respect for full transparency, we want to let our guests know that there have been tragic fatal accidents on the Misty Fjords flight in years past.

    How big are the planes?

Answer: There are two types of planes used for the tour, and you'll typically be in a group of 6-10 guests on the flight. Everyone gets a window seat on these flights.

What should we wear and bring?

Answer: For comfort, we typically recommend long pants, closed-toed shoes and a jacket, as the air temperature will be a few degrees cooler than the ground temperature. Since there is an opportunity to get out of the plane, a rain jacket is advisable as well.

What if our ship is delayed or doesn't make it into port? Refund?

Answer: It's very rare that a ship is delayed into port, but in those cases, we will try our best to work with you to reschedule the tour to a later time. If that is not a possibility or your ship doesn't make it into port, we will refund you.

Can you see wildlife from the plane?

Answer: If you have sharp eyes, it's certainly possible to see wildlife on the mountains below. The plane flies low enough to distinguish individual animals, but of course the pilots have to respect local wildlife so it's not an objective of this tour.
