No Alaskan adventure would be complete without a Ketchikan flightseeing experience soaring above some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. The Misty Fjords Flightseeing experience is our pick of the best of the Ketchikan flightseeing tours and is a truly stunning adventure. Climb aboard the world’s most famous bush plane, the DeHavilland Beaver, and soar above the magnificent Misty Fjords National Monument, which comprises 2.3 million acres of breathtaking natural beauty and grandeur. You’ll spot deep fjords, crystal lakes, massive glaciers, cascading waterfalls, and towering ancient forests cloaking snow-capped peaks, all from an eagle’s-eye view of this vast and dramatically beautiful wilderness. During your two-hour flight, a highlight will no doubt be a heart-stopping landing on the clear waters of an alpine lake or inaccessible fjord, where you’ll be able to step out onto one of the plane’s pontoons to experience the bracing fresh air and absolute stillness of an environment so remote and untouched you’ll feel like you’ve entered another world. This incredible region is not uninhabited, however: Have your binoculars at the ready for a chance at spotting herds of mountain goats, brown and black bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, wolves, moose, and bald eagles as your experienced bush pilot takes you on the flight of a lifetime!

Your Ketchikan flightseeing adventure begins at a pick-up point conveniently located within walking distance of the cruise docks. From here, a short transfer will take you to the plane base, where you’ll receive a short video orientation. Then it’s all aboard the floatplane for a thrilling water take-off! Every passenger has a window seat, so there’s no fear of missing anything as you soar over Ketchikan and towards the towering 3000-foot cliffs carved out by thousands of years of glacial movement. These stunning escarpments mark the entrance to Misty Fjords flightseeing and the beginning of your ultimate wilderness adventure. All the while, your pilot will keep you updated on the sights through noise-canceling headsets. Later, back in Ketchikan, you will still feel like you’re flying high long after your Misty Fjords Flightseeing adventure comes to a close.

Wowmy wife was nervous. The take-off and landing were the most gentle I have ever experience. Water is the way to do that. The views were unforgettable. I would do it again. It was everything I expected and more!

Misty Fjords August 2/2018We arrived at the airport to find out that there was an issue with the plane and that we had been moved from our 12:45 pm flight to a 2:00 pm flight. The person (in charge ?) was called to speak to us as no one seemed to know what was going on. It seemed a little disorganized, which was unsettling for us. The flight was great, however, the pilot was mostly interested in speaking with other American passengers and we could barely get a word in. He ignored our questions and when asked for a photo on the pontoon he grunted and obliged with one photo after he had offered to take photos to the other passengers. Pretty disappointing service.

Misty Fjords - August 2/2018Enjoyed the scenic views but unfortunately Van (our Pilot) wasn't a communicator. I was aware to turn up the volume on the headphones but friends I traveled with assumed they were to block the sound of the plane and they missed out on the narration. Van landed offshore & grunted to us that we could stand on the float if interested and we asked him how to get out of the plane.
Two people including myself stood on the float and another passenger asked Van why weren't we landing on the pontoon as she felt that was what she had purchased.
Van responded that he wasn't landing on the pontoon.
All throughout Canada & Alaska we have had the most wonderful guides, drivers, etc and this was a shame for our last tour.
If your pilots don't feel like being friendly and enthusiastic why don't they stay in bed, it did spoil our tour.

AMAZING!!!Our pilot (Steve) was great. Even though our day in Ketchikan began 100% foggy, it lifted midday and we had beautiful, clear skies for our flight. We saw a humpback whale from the air! Steve spotted a brown bear eating grass and he landed the plane so we could get a closer look. Misty Fjords are SOOO beautiful!

A sight for sore eyesHappy we chose the float plane mode to see the beauty of Alaska. Our pilot (John) was casual, fun and a pleasant person. He was very understanding about us traveling with a toddler and infant. He said they would fall asleep in his 'lullaby' seaplane and they promptly did. It was a breathtaking trip with a 5min stop on the water. We loved it and glad we could see such an untouched, pristine part of the world.

Will we make it back to the ship in time? What if we don't?

Answer: We've never left anyone behind and only schedule tours that work well with your cruise ship's itinerary. We leave plenty of cushion so you can confidently book your trips independently.

Do the flights ever get canceled due to weather?

Answer: Yes, safety is a number one priority so weather conditions are taken into account each day. In certain cases, the weather can lift and a slight delay will still allow the flight to continue. However, if a flight is canceled completely due to weather circumstances, you will always receive a full refund.

What if our ship is delayed or doesn't make it into port? Refund?

Answer: It's very rare that a ship is delayed into port, but in those cases, we will try our best to work with you to reschedule the tour to a later time. If that is not a possibility or your ship doesn't make it into port, we will of course refund the full cost of the tour.

What should we wear and bring?

Answer: For comfort, we typically recommend long pants, closed-toed shoes and a jacket, as the air temperature will be a few degrees cooler than the ground temperature. Since there is an opportunity to get out of the plane, a rain jacket is advisable as well.

Can you see wildlife from the plane?

Answer: If you have sharp eyes, it's certainly possible to see wildlife on the mountains below. The plane flies low enough to distinguish individual animals, but of course the pilots have to respect local wildlife so it's not an objective of this tour.

    How big are the planes?

Answer: There are a few types of planes used for the tour, and you'll typically be in a group of 6-10 guests on the flight. Everyone gets a window seat on these flights.
