Description

This Ketchikan excursion immerses you in the natural splendor of the Tongass National Forest, the largest national forest in the United States and largest temperate rainforest in the world. Your Rainforest Canoe Adventure takes you on a scenic journey through the forest to the shores of Lake Harriet Hunt. At this pristine mountain lake, you’ll climb aboard a 20-person Native-style canoe for a gentle paddle on the tranquil waters of the lake, where you can soak in the sights and sounds of the surrounding forest and the abundant bird life and wildlife inhabiting this ruggedly beautiful wilderness. Back on shore, it’s time to enjoy a hearty Alaskan-style snack of smoked salmon, clam chowder, and fresh rolls with wildberry jams and warming beverages before a short nature hike into the forest, where a naturalist guide will identify the unique flora and fauna you spot along the trail. Another gentle paddle back to the canoe dock follows before you reboard your motorcoach for the scenic trip back to the cruise ship docks in Ketchikan.

A favorite Ketchikan excursion, the Rainforest Canoe Adventure and Nature Trail adventure combines two gentle physical activities suitable for all ages and physical abilities. It’s a great option for exploring the pristine wilderness of the Tongass National Forest without any excessive physical activity or motor noise that could disturb the peace and tranquillity of the rainforest. Canoes used on the lake are fast, stable, and easy to maneuver and paddle. Plus paddling is directed by an experienced guide, making for smooth gliding across the secluded lake. Pick-up and drop-off for the excursion are conveniently located at the cruise docks, allowing you ample time after your Rainforest Canoe Adventure to spend time exploring the charming town of Ketchikan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need previous canoe experience? Is it safe?
This tour is a great entry-level canoe tour and perfect for first-timers or those with experience. The canoes are 37-foot vessels that can seat up to 20 guests at at time and are incredibly stable in the water.
What if our cruise ship's schedule is canceled or delayed?
We will try our best to work with you to reschedule the tour to a later time. If that is not a possibility or your ship doesn't make it into port, then you will receive a refund, less any non-refundable fees.
What if it rains? Do the trips get canceled?
Ketchikan is in the heart of a temperate rainforest, and we would never do anything if we stopped for the rain. Please do not let the possibility of rain deter you from booking. Southeast Alaska is at its most beautiful on misty rainy days.
What should I wear/bring?
No special equipment is necessary for you to bring. Dress warmly and in layers as the temperature can fluctuate throughout the day. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended for the nature trail and for your comfort. Life jackets will provided for the canoe portion of the trip.
Is there a weight limit for the canoes?
Over the years we have seen all shapes and sizes! We do not have a set weight limit, but please keep in mind that guests will need to be able to get in and out of the canoe on their own accord as well as be comfortable seated in a canoe for a total of 2 hours (1 hour each way).
