Description

No trip to Alaska is complete without a Misty Fjords flightseeing adventure. Climb aboard a classic DeHavilland Beaver or Otter floatplane and soar over one of the state’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders. With 2.3 million acres of protected wilderness, Misty Fjords National Monument is a landscape of sheer granite cliffs, crystal-clear lakes, plunging waterfalls, and ancient forests covering snow-dusted peaks.

The experience begins just a short walk from your cruise ship, where you’ll be picked up and transferred to the floatplane base. After a quick orientation video, you’ll take off from the water and begin your journey into Alaska’s untamed frontier. This flight offers more than just stunning views—it’s a full sensory experience. Your seasoned bush pilot provides live narration through noise-canceling headsets, bringing the region’s geology, wildlife, and history to life as you fly. Every guest enjoys a guaranteed window seat, so you won’t miss a moment.

Your exact route may vary with weather, which only adds to the uniqueness of the journey. You may spot New Eddystone Rock and Big Goat Lake to the south, or fly north toward Neets Bay and Bell Island Hot Springs. No matter the direction, the views are unforgettable. Keep an eye out for wildlife along the way—mountain goats, black and brown bears, moose, bald eagles, and more inhabit this dramatic landscape.

Whether it’s your first time in Ketchikan or your fifth, this Misty Fjords Flightseeing Tour delivers a once-in-a-lifetime perspective on Alaska’s rugged beauty—and memories that will stay with you long after you land.

With respect for full transparency, we want to let our guests know that there have been tragic fatal accidents on the Misty Fjords flight in years past. While small aircraft is the main mode of transportation in Alaska, there will always be risks. Our operating partner, Taquan Air, takes every precaution to make the most informed decision about flight conditions for that day and will cancel the tour if the weather poses any threat. Their pilots are extensively trained, monitor weather conditions closely, and fly with at least 4 miles of visibility. The company has also voluntarily adopted safety practices beyond those required by federal standards.

A helicopter ride over jaw-dropping landscapes, huskies by the dozen, and a thrilling ride across the icy surface of the Herbert Glacier – helicopter dogsledding tours have to be the ultimate Alaskan adventure! Dogsledding in Juneau is the highlight of many an Alaskan adventure, and the unique Helicopter and Dogsled Glacier Excursion includes a thrilling helicopter ride over the spectacular Juneau Icefield, as well as a landing right on the Herbert Glacier, where your team of huskies is waiting excitedly to take you on a mushing adventure across the icy landscape. Dogsledding in Juneau is an indelible part of local culture and history that lives on today, and with this excursion, you’ll have the opportunity to spend time with professional mushers and learn more about their amazing huskies and mushing life. Each dogsled is pulled by a team of 12-14 huskies, and you have the choice of riding on the runners or being comfortably seated inside the sled itself. At the signal from their musher, the dogs are off and loping across the icy snowfields at a pace you won’t believe! Then, back at the dog camp, it’s time to thank your tail-wagging team and have your photograph taken with them, dressed in traditional Iditarod Trail dogsled gear if you so wish!

The heli-base is located just a short ride from the cruise docks in Juneau, and your tour lasts for 1.5 hours from take-off to your return to the helicopter base. As with all other helicopter dogsledding tours, you’ll meet your pilot/guide and receive a brief safety orientation before boarding your helicopter. Any initial nerves will be quickly quelled by your total absorption in the bird’s-eye view of spellbinding icefields and endless snow-capped mountains. On landing at Herbert Glacier, you’ll meet your dog team and their mushers and be readied for your exhilarating dash across the snowfields! Besides being great fun, dogsledding in Juneau will take you below beautiful mountains you’ll have to see to believe. On your helicopter ride back to base, you will have a real appreciation of the important role that huskies and their mushers played in opening up the vast Alaskan wilderness. Helicopter dogsledding tours are in high demand during the summer season in Juneau, so be sure to book early for this amazing experience!
