Description

Our most popular Juneau helicopter tour and one of the best ways to see the Juneau Icefield from the sky, this top-rated Alaska helicopter tour combines the thrill of flightseeing with the once-in-a-lifetime chance to land on a glacier and explore its icy terrain.

Your adventure begins with round-trip transportation from the Juneau cruise docks. Enjoy the short, scenic drive to the helicopter base, where you’ll check in, meet your pilot, and gear up with glacier boots. After a brief safety orientation, you’ll lift off for a helicopter flight over glaciers, mountain peaks, and deep blue icefalls that define Southeast Alaska’s dramatic landscape. If it’s your first helicopter flight, don’t worry—any nerves fade fast once you’re in the air and taking in the views.

Your pilot will land on the Herbert Glacier, one of the most spectacular glaciers in the Juneau Icefield, giving you time to walk on the ice, capture incredible photos, and take in the vast, untouched beauty surrounding you.

This Juneau helicopter excursion is perfect for travelers short on time who still want the unforgettable experience of a helicopter ride and glacier landing. For a longer adventure, explore our Helicopter Glacier Trek or Taku Glacier by Land, Water, & Ice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will our group all be in the same helicopter?

The helicopters hold up to 6 people. While we strive to keep all groups under 6 together, in order to balance the weight distribution in the helicopter & ensure a safe flight, we can't guarantee where in the aircraft you'll be seated, and groups may be split up into separate helicopters upon reaching the helicopter base. If this is the case, you will still land with the rest of your party on the glacier, and will be able to spend this time with them.

What if I need extra help on the tour?
Your pilot will be with you the entire tour, so they’ll be happy to lend a helping hand whenever necessary. This tour does require a moderate level of fitness in order to load/unload the helicopter and navigate on icy/uneven terrain. If you require extra assistance, don’t hesitate to contact us ahead of your tour and discuss your particular needs.
Can children come on the tour?
Absolutely! We are more than happy to accommodate children of all ages.
What if our cruise ship's schedule is canceled or delayed?
We will try our best to work with you to reschedule the tour to a later time. If that is not a possibility or your ship doesn't make it into port, then you will receive a refund, less any non-refundable fees.
What happens if the weather is too bad to fly?

If the weather is just not cooperating and the pilots determine that it’s not safe to fly, we will contact you before your tour. It's best to be ready to receive incoming calls rather than trying to proactively reach us day-of to inquire about the weather. If we contact you and you cannot be rescheduled, you'll be refunded less any applicable fees.

How many passengers per helicopter?
Each helicopter can seat up to 6 passengers, provided the weight and balance calculations work out in each aircraft.
What if my tour group is larger than 6 people?
There are several helicopters available at the base and can make accommodations for larger groups with advance notice. If your group exceeds 6 passengers and requires the use of multiple aircraft, we instruct the pilots to coordinate landing locations on the glacier so that you can have your landing time together.
Will the pilot get out with us?
Definitely. Your pilot will act as your guide for your entire helicopter tour, including the time you’ll spend on the glacier. This allows for a truly focused tour experience.
Why do you land on the Herbert Glacier?
We find the Herbert Glacier to be of particular charm and seclusion. Most passengers on our helicopter tours feel like they’re the only people in the world while on their glacier landing, and we like to keep it that unique and exclusive for everyone.

Description

Ready to get those cruise legs some exercise? A guided hike through the Alaskan rainforest on the Chilkoot Trail Hike and Float provides a great opportunity to get some energy out, learn about the area, and experience the infamous Chilkoot Trail first-hand. The 2-mile, one-way hike culminates at the Taiya River where your raft awaits. From here, begin a peaceful river float down the Taiya as your guide recounts tales of the Gold Rush history and enjoy the surrounding scenery which resonates with Alaskan beauty. One of our more active Skagway shore excursions, this tour combines hiking with a gentle float trip and contains all the same history and highlights you find on the various city and bus tours. Get outside, breathe some fresh air, and discover why Alaska lured you North to begin with on one of the best combination Skagway shore excursions.

Starting with a scenic 10-mile drive out to the historic town of Dyea, the Chilkoot Trail Hike and Float begins as your guide narrates the short bus ride which cruises along the northern tip of the Taiya Inlet. It’s not uncommon to see eagles and even seals along the journey to the start of the Chilkoot Trail, which was the notoriously arduous path taken by thousands of prospectors a century ago in hopes of striking it rich in Yukon’s interior. The hike begins, meandering through the Alaskan rainforest and up the infamous Chilkoot Trail. This hike is geared towards the active traveler and contains moderate elevation gain (about 300 ft. over the first half a mile and then down 300 ft. in the second half-mile (steep) and then the last mile is mostly flat) and natural terrain. Here, the naturalist guide supplements the history with tidbits about this lush, wet ecological zone. The hike culminates right at the raft. Climb aboard the sturdy river raft for a peaceful float down the Taiya River, which is fed by high-mountain glacial streams. Depending on the time of year, bald eagles can be prominent, and the surrounding views resonate with Alaska’s natural outdoor beauty. Enjoy a riverside snack after the float before heading back to Skagway, where you will still have plenty of time to explore the town or even join another tour. For active adventurers on the hunt for exciting Skagway shore excursions, the Chilkoot Trail Hike and Float Tour provides the perfect mix of movement and scenic beauty!

To add a bicycle trek to this excursion, consider the White Pass Train & Bike.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will we get wet on the rafting ride?
No, this tour is a scenic and mellow float tour and does not contain any whitewater or rapids. Ponchos can be supplied if there is a drizzle but we recommend bringing your camera along as there is no worries about splashing water.
What will the weather be like?
One thing that is predictable about Alaskan coastal weather is that the weather can be variable. In the course of the day we can see sun, drizzle, sun, clouds and everything in between. Our tours are very rarely due to weather as the conditions are typically fleeting. The classic saying is that if you don't like the Skagway weather now, just wait 45 minutes. A sunny, warm day might end up rainy and vice versa.
What's the largest group size?
The maximum group size that the rafts can hold is 11 people.
How difficult is the hike?
Participants must be in good physical condition for the 1.5-2 hour hike. Those with back, knee, hip, or balance issues should consider their participation in this activity. Due to safety reasons and keeping on tour schedule, your guide will strongly advise against participation in the hike if they feel it to be too strenuous for your ability level. An alternate arrangement will be made so you can participate in the float portion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I bring?
The weather is very hard to predict in Southeast Alaska. We always recommend being prepared for rain or sunshine by dressing in layers and bringing sunglasses. A warm mid-layer and a waterproof outerlayer is a good idea, and a hat and mittens can make a big difference. Don't forget your camera to capture all those great sightings, and binoculars make those whales pop!
What is the boat like?
Our boat is approximately 45 feet long and 12 feet wide, with a low to the water profile design; it has extra-large windows allowing unrestricted viewing while getting up close to wildlife. We do consider ourselves one of the smaller boats – not like the 150 passenger boat offered by the cruise line. Our custom-built whale-watching boats have the capacity for 26-49 passengers. They are very spacious and allow us to implement physical distancing as needed. We have much more square footage per passenger than any of the other small boat experiences out there. The boat is heated and does have a small bathroom.
Where do we get picked up and do you guarantee returning to my ship on time?
You will be meeting the guide 30-minutes prior to the tour departure time at the Excursion Hub. Icy Strait Point has two docks. You will either be arriving at the Adventure Landing or the Wilderness Landing. Directions to the Excursion Hub from your dock will be provided in your confirmation email after booking. You will be returned directly to Icy Strait Point and we guarantee that you will be back to your ship on time.
Is this tour wheelchair accessible?
Though we cannot accommodate a wheelchair on board for safety reasons, we have accommodated many guests with mobility issues. We can stow a foldable wheelchair on the back deck so it is available immediately after the tour. Or it can be stowed on the dock waiting for you when you get back. Guests must be able to physically walk into the boat on their own power but with captain assistance and be able to sit up in their seat unassisted.
Will I get sea sick?
We usually don’t encounter heavy swells or the type of seas that tend to cause seasickness. With our sturdier boats you often don’t feel the waves. However, the wind can pick up on occasion even on the Inside Passage and the water can get choppy. So, if you are prone to motion sickness then we recommend taking medicine 1 hour before the tour. No need to worry about drowsiness, the excitement of the whales will keep you awake!
