Alaska Sourdough History & Brick Oven Pizza Making
Description
This experience offers a relaxed way to enjoy local food, learn a bit about Alaska's history, and spend time in downtown Ketchikan. It combines a short, engaging lesson with hands-on cooking and a sit-down meal, all in a comfortable indoor setting with great views. The full experience takes about 3 hours from the Ward Cove Cruise Terminal or 2.5 hours from the Downtown Visitor Center.
After transportation to the restaurant, you’ll start with a simple introduction to Alaska’s sourdough tradition. You’ll hear how sourdough starter became a staple here and how it’s used to make pizza dough today. The explanation is clear and casual, and no cooking experience is needed.
Next, you’ll build your own personal-sized pizza. You can stick with familiar toppings like pepperoni, sausage, mozzarella, and peppers, or try Alaskan-style options such as smoked salmon, lemon ricotta, hot honey, pickled red onions, and house-made meatballs. Your pizza is baked in a brick oven and served hot.
You’ll enjoy your meal on a balcony overlooking historic downtown Ketchikan, with views of nearby buildings and streets below. One local beer or wine is included, along with soda, tea, or coffee for non-alcoholic options. Dessert is a crisp cannoli filled with sweet cream and chocolate chips.
Before you head out, you’ll receive a sourdough starter kit to take home. After the meal, you can either return by vehicle or explore historic Creek Street on your own.
