Description

Enjoy a secluded Sitka whale watching & marine life adventure on the Private Wilds of Sitka Sound Expedition by Boat. Aboard the Peregrine, a 30-foot coastal expedition vessel, your expert guide will take you on a wildlife-packed adventure through the waters surrounding Sitka. Framed on either side by the Baranof Islands & Mount Edgecumbe, you’ll be awed by the natural beauty both surrounding & below you. Keep your eyes out for the myriad of kelp forests below, and your eyes on the horizons for whales, porpoises, bald eagles, and more.

Sea conditions permitting, you’ll circumnavigate St. Lazaria National Wildlife Refuge for some of the Inside Passage’s best bird watching. The rugged cliffs of this island are home to nearly half a million birds, including tufted puffins, guillemots, murres, and rhinoceros auklets. Your expert guide will navigate the waters in search of Sitka whale watching, beautiful views, or whatever else meets your fancy. As you navigate the coastlines, gaze up in the moss-draped trees, and keep your eyes peeled for black-tailed deer and brown bears foraging in the intertidal zone.

John, your boat captain & guide on the Private Wilds of Sitka Sound Expedition by Boat has over 35 years of experience taking guests on marine adventures in Alaska. With his expert knowledge, he’ll guide you safely through the beautiful myriad of islands, and use his extensive understanding of local wildlife to find marine life for you to experience. Frequently Asked Questions

Do you guarantee that we will see wildlife?
While whale watching is one of this tour's main attractions, we will do our utmost to provide you with an unforgettable experience without compromising the welfare of the animals. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee close sightings of these majestic creatures. Some boat operators may be willing to risk the whales' well-being in order to give customers a closer look, but we will not do that. Instead, we prefer to wait for opportunities to whale watch without stressing the animals.
Does the boat have a restroom?
Yes, there is a restroom on board, as well as the opportunity to use the restroom before boarding the boat.
What happens if there's bad weather?
Our tours run rain or shine, so be sure to pack accordingly and bring a waterproof jacket even if the forecast doesn't call for rain, as Alaska's weather can be unpredictable. If our tour guides deem the conditions too dangerous for the trip, your reservation will be canceled and we will provide a refund.
What should I bring to this tour?
Rain is a common occurrence in the Sitka Sound area, so make sure to dress appropriately. Long pants, closed-toed shoes, and a waterproof jacket are highly recommended. It's also wise to bring extra layers in case of a sudden drop in temperature, as well as a bottle of water and your camera. Please note that space is limited, so try to pack light.
What kind of boat will we be on?
You will be aboard a 30-foot vessel offering comfort and stability to up to six passengers and additional crew. The boat features a drop bow, making it easy to board without getting wet, and there are two outdoor viewing areas and spacious seating inside. Enjoy the luxury of a smooth ride and the convenience of easy boarding with this state-of-the-art vessel.
