Description
This experience is an easy, enjoyable way to spend about two hours just outside Skagway, especially if you want a mix of food, history, and something hands-on. You’ll start with a short transfer from town to a historic trail camp set beside a real waterfall near White Pass. As soon as you arrive, you’ll notice the sound of rushing water and the old-style buildings that give the place its gold rush feel.
Most guests start with the meal, and it’s a big reason people enjoy this stop. The salmon is wild Alaska salmon, grilled over alderwood, and it’s served buffet-style so you can go back for seconds. There’s also chicken, baked beans, rice, salads, and a few sides, plus blueberry cake for dessert. It’s relaxed and family-friendly, with plenty of time to sit, eat, and enjoy the setting.
After the meal, you’ll head to a small performance area where costumed performers put on a lighthearted gold rush–era melodrama. It’s meant to be fun and informal, with a bit of humor and audience interaction. You don’t need to know anything about Alaska's history to enjoy it.
Then comes gold panning. A prospector shows you how it works, and you’ll get time to try it yourself in the camp’s gold troughs. Everyone finds real gold, and you get to keep whatever you find. Before heading back, you can wander around the camp, take photos by the waterfall, browse the gift shop, or grab a cookie and warm cider. It’s a simple, well-paced experience that gives you a real taste of Alaska’s gold rush past without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
