Getting Around Seward: Your Guide to Transportation Options

Seward, Alaska, is a charming port town along the shores of the stunning Resurrection Bay, where natural beauty and outdoor adventures await. While it’s a small and easily walkable town, there are plenty of ways to get around and explore—from the bustling harbor to nearby gems like Exit Glacier and Kenai Fjords National Park. Here’s a handy guide to help you make the most of your visit to Seward!

Walking Around Seward

Seward is a very pedestrian-friendly town, especially around the downtown and harbor areas, making it easy to explore on foot!  I love walking here because you can really take in the local sights, check out shops and cafes, and soak up those beautiful waterfront views. Many of Seward’s top spots, like the Alaska SeaLife Center, the harbor, and the historic downtown, are located about a mile apart, so you can leisurely walk from one spot to another. Just remember to dress for the weather—temperatures can change, and it’s often rainy here!

Seward Free Shuttle

Seward City Tours operates the convenient Seward Free Shuttle, making it easy to get around town, especially during the busy summer months. This free shuttle runs on a 5-mile loop that takes about 30 minutes to complete, with stops at popular spots like Seward Harbor, the Alaska SeaLife Center, downtown, and the boat harbor. It also stops at local campgrounds and hotels, so exploring without a car is a breeze! Look out for the Seward City Tours bus with “FREE SHUTTLE” printed in red, and be sure to use designated stops, as the shuttle doesn’t deviate from its route. With shuttles running frequently all day, you won’t have to wait long to hop on!

Rental Cars

Seward has a LOT to offer besides its charming waterfront downtown. If you plan to explore beyond the town and visit gems like Exit Glacier and nearby hiking trails on your schedule, I highly recommend renting a car. Companies like Hertz and Avis have rental options in Seward, but availability can be limited in the peak summer months, so it’s smart to book ahead. With a rental car, you can explore more of the area, including Kenai Fjords National Park, or even take the scenic Seward Highway for day trips beyond Seward.

Taxis and Rideshares

While Seward doesn’t have rideshare services like Uber or Lyft, there are local taxis ready to help you get around. Taxis are perfect for short trips within town or for rides to and from the cruise terminal, train station, or Seward airport. Rates are pretty reasonable, and drivers often know the area well and can give you some local tips and recommendations. My personal recommendation is PJS Taxis & Tours - they offer great service and can even arrange trips to Anchorage or Whitter for cruise guests!

Biking

If you’re up for something a little more active, consider renting a bike. Summer is great for biking around Seward, with mild weather and stunning views. The Seward Bike Shop and Beats Walkin E Bikes are two local shops that rent bikes by the hour or day, so you can ride along the waterfront, check out nearby trails, or even head toward Exit Glacier. With bike-friendly paths around town, it’s a relaxing way to explore at your own pace.

Alaska Railroad

For a truly scenic journey to or from Seward, the Alaska Railroad is an unforgettable option, especially on the Coastal Classic route from Anchorage. National Geographic Traveler ranked it a Top Ten Train Ride in North America. The trip treats you to Alaska’s best views, from glaciers to mountain landscapes that I guarantee will not disappoint! The train station in Seward is right by the harbor, making it easy to connect with local transportation or tours. While it’s not for getting around town, the train is a fantastic way to reach Seward and start your adventure.

Tour and Shuttle Services to Local Attractions

Planning to visit spots outside Seward, like Exit Glacier or Kenai Fjords National Park? Various tour companies offer shuttles and guided tours, providing round-trip transportation so you can relax and enjoy the scenery. Some popular options include:

  • Exit Glacier Shuttle: A convenient service running frequently in summer, taking you from Seward to Exit Glacier and back. This hassle-free option lets you focus on the hike and views.

  • Kenai Fjords Boat Tours: Several operators offer boat tours around Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park. While more of a tour than a shuttle, these trips give you a unique view of the area and access to remote spots. Learn more about these glacier & wildlife cruises here!

Seward Airport and Air Taxi Services

Seward has a small regional airport with air taxis and charter flights available for sightseeing, fishing trips, or access to remote areas. While most visitors don’t use it for getting around Seward, a scenic flight can offer stunning aerial views of glaciers, fjords, and wildlife, adding an unforgettable element to your trip.

Getting to Seward from Anchorage: Additional Options

In addition to the Alaska Railroad, there are several ways to travel between Anchorage and Seward, including:

  • Coach and Shuttle Services: Various companies offer comfortable, direct shuttles between Anchorage and Seward, which are particularly useful during the summer season. This is a popular choice for cruise passengers needing a transfer.

  • Seward Highway: The drive along the Seward Highway is stunning, following the coastline with views of mountains and ocean. Driving your own car or renting one for the journey gives you flexibility and a chance to stop along the way.

Choosing the Best Transportation Option

Your best option in Seward will depend on your plans and what you’re excited to see. Walking, biking, or using the free shuttle is great if you’re sticking to town, while a rental car or shuttle service will let you explore beyond. Whatever you choose, Seward’s transportation options make it easy to experience this Alaskan gem your way!
