Smaller groups, better experience. Holland America's ship-organized excursions often fill large buses and boats to capacity. Independent tours through Alaska Shore Tours feature smaller group sizes, meaning more personal attention from your guide, better wildlife viewing, and a more intimate experience overall.

When to book. Alaska's cruise season runs May through September, with peak demand in June and July. Popular tours like the helicopter excursions and glacier hikes sell out weeks in advance, especially for mid-summer sailings. We recommend booking as soon as your cruise dates are confirmed — but last-minute seats are sometimes available on select tours, particularly earlier and later in the season.

Port logistics. All of our tours include round-trip transportation from the cruise ship dock or a meeting point within easy walking distance. Combining tours. With Holland America's generous time in port — especially in Skagway (13-15 hours) and Juneau (8-10 hours) — many guests book two tours on the same day. A shorter morning tour (like the 2.5-hour Whale Watching Tour in Juneau or the 2.5-hour Simply Amazing Sitka Tour) pairs well with an afternoon activity, or vice versa.
